Anthony Joshua told he can beat Oleksandr Usyk in third fight between rivals

Anthony Joshua has been backed to beat Oleksandr Usyk in their potential trilogy fight by new trainer Ben Davison.

'AJ' put on an exceptional performance under the guidance of Davison last weekend to stop Otto Wallin in Saudi Arabia. The Swede's corner pulled him out of the fight after being outclassed by Joshua for five rounds. Deontay Wilder was in action in the co-main event as he ruined his $100million two-fight deal with Joshua by shockingly losing to Joseph Parker.

Davison, who previously coached Joshua's bitter rival Tyson Fury, is now confident the Brit could beat heavyweight champion Usyk despite losing twice to him. Joshua came up short to Usyk in September 2021 and failed to win his world titles back in their rematch last August.

"We'd love to put the Usyk fight right for him, purely off emotion. I said to him when he first came to us - I'm very confident we could help him do that," Davison told iFL TV. Joshua is going to have to wait for a third shot at Usyk as Fury is set to fight him for the undisputed heavyweight world titles on February 17th.

"Executional, professional and well prepared, that's how I put it," Davison said of Joshua's win against Wallin. "He is very professional to work with and it was very enjoyable. I'm pleased that he got the fruits of his labour. I don't know what is next for him or who is next for him. Step by step, who knows. I don't get involved in that, that's Eddie and all the rest of it to work with.

Davison doesn't know whether Joshua will seek his guidance again for his next fight or go back to his old trainer Derrick James, who coached 'AJ' for his wins against Jermaine Franklin and Robert Helenius earlier this year. Joshua said he is open to fighting Fury next and plans to be in attendance for his upcoming fight against Usyk.

“I tend not to go to many fights but Saudi's putting on really good shows, that’s an iconic fight, so I’ll try and get out here with the team. I think it’s gonna be a really, really good fight. I’m going to be straight up, I’m leaning towards Usyk, but who knows? They’re both at the top of their game. I wish them well. I hope they have a great training camp," he said.
