Call The Midwife upped the drama for the 2023 Christmas special when they featured a car crash involving a woman giving birth to four babies.

The intense scenes appeared near the climactic scenes of the festive special of the hit BBC show as the staff at Nonnatus House prepared for another busy Christmas helping expectant mums. The period drama is set in the late 1960s and saw a character, named Brenda Shelby, nearing the end of a pregnancy - which had been made possible by early IVF treatment methods.

As Brenda started to go into labour, she was being transported via an ambulance - but there was a snowstorm. Brenda started to give birth during the journey - and the midwives helped her welcome a baby son.

A second child was on the way, but events took a dramatic turn as a car skidded in the blizzard and collided with the ambulance. The medical condition of the new mum worsened as it became clear she had more babies to give birth to, but she started to lose a dangerous amount of blood once she welcomed a third son.

Emergency services helped get Brenda to the hospital in time for her to give birth to a third child - and she was able to receive medical attention. The dramatic scenes proved to be a hit with viewers who rushed to social media to comment on the festive special.

One fan gushed via X/Twitter: “The annual highlight and the annual cry! Looking forward to the new series.” Another commented: "Well #CallTheMidwife reduced me to tears - a beautiful crafted episode."

And another praised the show, writing: "Since it began in 2012 #CallTheMidwife has maintained a consistently high standard. I doubt if there has been one episode that fell short, thanks to fine scripts, wonderful acting & detailed research. It is deceptively soft-centred but each episode is hard-hitting. Unforgettable."

While the thirteenth season of the much loved BBC show is now set to begin airing soon, fans of the show received good news earlier this year - that the show will be continued to be on air until at least 2026. Call the Midwife showrunner Heidi Thomas commented back in February: “I’m overjoyed by the news that the doors of Nonnatus House will be open for a few more years!”

She told the BBC: “Call the Midwife is the pride and joy of all who work on it, but it’s our fantastic, loyal audience that matters most. We are a family behind the scenes, on the screen, and in front of the telly, and I’m thrilled that we’re all heading into the 1970’s together. Fifteen series is a tremendous achievement and it’s a testament to the passion and dedication of our cast and crew, of whom I’m very proud.

“But the show wouldn’t be the phenomenal success it is without the formidable presence of our creator and writer Heidi Thomas. Her continued devotion to the characters and determination to tell the untold stories of women is truly inspiring. I can’t wait to see what she has in store for us and our extremely loyal audience in the future.”
