James Martin's odd choice of song for Christmas Day left his fans completely bewildered.

The TV chef appeared on ITV earlier today, in a pre-recorded episode alongside a string of celebrity guests including actress and singer Hannah Waddingham, Denise Van Outen and First Dates star Merlin Griffiths. Throughout the show, the chef, 51, delighted fans as they tuned in ahead of their Christmas lunch or festive activities.

He offered advice and demonstrated how to cook the perfect dinner and entertain guests, with Hannah being unable to resist the scrumptious roast chicken he had prepared. But as the show came to an end, guests helped themselves to a festive food bonanza over a cheese board.

Martin went on to say: "That's it, that's all we've got time for today. A brilliant show, a massive thank you to all my guests – Galton Blackiston, Paul Ainsworth, Merlin Griffiths, Hannah Waddingham, Alexis Ffrench and of course, Hannah Waddingham." Following this, he and his co-stars headed to the pub to celebrate the big day.

Taking to the stage at the Wonston Arms, close to his home, James and his band performed a rather un-festive song which left fans at home bewildered. James and co, performed Sympathy With The Devil, originally by The Rolling Stones. Taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, one penned: "I'm having a fever dream in which James Martin is on TV on Christmas Day jamming along to Sympathy With The Devil…"

A second went on to add: "Sympathy for the Devil is a lovely festive song for James Martin to cover for his Christmas special." While another added: "James Martin is playing Sympathy For The Devil with his 'band' in his house on Christmas day. It's the worst thing I've ever seen. " Meanwhile, a third tweeted: "Completely bizarre festive telly - cook James Martin closes his Christmas show by playing guitar in a terrible cover of Sympathy For The Devil."

Elsewhere on the show, Hannah Waddingham delighted fans as she appeared alongside James. The Ted Lasso star revealed that before getting the part on the show, she and co-star Jason Sudeikis instantly hit it off at the script read-through. But her appearance had fans saying the same thing about her.

One delighted viewer commented: "@hanwaddingham on James Martin is just fabulous. What a great lady." While a second went on to say: "The more I see her the more I love her. Funny, drop-dead gorgeous, and seems to be an absolute riot to be with." Another typed: "I absolutely LOVVVVE Hannah Waddingham! Her Christmas show was EXCELLENT & brilliant! It's great to see her on @sat_jamesmartin."
