A frustrated Mauricio Pochettino has confessed that his faltering Chelsea players have "too many things" to improve on following Sunday's limp 2-1 loss away to Wolves.

Star signing Christopher Nkunku's first goal for the club after missing four months through injury wasn't enough to give Chelsea fans something to cheer about at Christmas, as second-half strikes from Mario Lemina and Matt Doherty did the damage. Pochettino's side squandered a heap of chances, including a gift which fell to Raheem Sterling, only for the ex- Liverpool and Manchester City forward to fluff his lines instead of passing to a team-mate for a certain goal to cap a dominant first-half display.

Post-match, the Blues boss bemoaned his players' mistakes. "We spoke a lot earlier in the season, it's a group of players and we are a young team," Pochettino told Sky Sports. "That doesn't mean we are young in age but we are a young team. Some are playing in the Premier League for the first time and they need a moment to adapt.

"It is about confidence and quality, too many things. We should score if we want to win games. We feel very disappointed. I am disappointed also because in the first five minutes of the second half we conceded too many corners."

As the pressure builds on the Argentine coach, who was only appointed in June, he's backing his youngsters to learn and help keep him in a job. "We have to keep going and pushing, young teams learn from this sort of game," Pochettino added.

"It was difficult because of the space. It made the task more difficult but we need to keep going because we are in a position which Chelsea shouldn't be in."

The former Southampton, Tottenham and Paris Saint-Germain boss went on to say: "We feel very disappointed because I think we deserved much more. This competition wounds you when you are not clinical enough. We created chances, that is why it is so disappointing. We conceded after a few corners and it was really difficult."

Chelsea are next in action on Wednesday at home to struggling Crystal Palace, who are without a win since November 4. The Blues have already lost more Premier League games in 2023 than any other side, suffering 19 defeats.
