Arguably the most popular Christmas film of all time, Elf is a film everyone knows and adores - but could there be a prequel to the nation's favourite festive film?

One of the best parts of Christmas is getting all cosy and putting on a festive film to get you in the spirit, and one many people will turn to is the iconic Elf film with Will Ferrell.

Released in 2003, fans have been hoping ever since for a second film, and it seems we're teased by it every year, even last year seeing Will Ferrell put his famous outfit on and become an Asda employee - but there's one fan theory that has blown people's minds.

The cult classic Christmas film has retained a loyal fan base since it debuted in 2003, and people are so obsessed with the movie that many have come up with bizarre theories about the plot. One strange idea goes viral each year as fans admit their 'minds are blown' by it.

Trent, an Elf super fan, previously explained on his blog: "So last night I was doing what I do every December and watching Elf on a loop when I had this thought." He subsequently tweeted the thought, which caused quite a stir. The tweet read: "What if Buddy's stepmum in Elf divorced James Caan, got custody of Buddy, renamed Buddy to Brennan, remarried and that's Step Brothers?"

Step Brothers is a comedy starring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, and it was released five years after Elf, which would make Elf a prequel. In both films, Mary Steenburgen plays Ferrell's characters' mum or step-mum, and Buddy receives more of a welcome from his step-mum in Elf than from his biological father.

Regarding the theory, some asked: "Why would Emily get custody of Buddy when Walter is his biological father?" Trent wrote: "During the divorce hearings Walter likely said Emily could have Buddy because he didn’t want him in the first place and she did want him. She's more fit to be his guardian."

So this would mean that Buddy's mum divorces his father, gets custody of him, and moves on with her life - and changes her son's name in the process. Trent also pointed out the similarities between the brothers of Ferrell's two characters, stating that Buddy and Brennan can both sing, and both have a real love of animals.

And possibly the strongest theory of all is that neither character will grow up. He wrote: "Both Buddy and Brennan cannot function as adults. It's the main issue in both flicks. When Buddy's stepmum in Elf asks, 'How long will you be staying with us?' Buddy says 'forever' and he means it.

"Brennan refuses to get a job and refuses to move outta the house because he's Buddy the Elf and wants to live at home forever. So there you have it. Elf is the prequel to Step Brothers and you cannot convince me that’s not true."

People responded to the tweet, with one writing: "My mind is in a pretzel thinking 'bout that," while another said: "Oh my god," and a third penned: "You just blew my mind". "Some heavy s***", one shocked fan added.

Do you believe the theory? Let us know in the comments.
