The late Queen Elizabeth II wanted to make sure she bought the perfect Christmas present for her great-grandson Prince Archie and called on Meghan Markle for help.

When the youngster was two, his mum said he wanted one thing in particular and her husband Prince Harry revealed the Queen went right ahead and made the purchase. She then had the gift shipped out to the Sussexes home in Montecito, California.

The gift was rather unusual, however, and comedian James Corden was left stunned when Harry told him what it was during an appearance on The Late Late Show. "My grandmother asked us what Archie wanted for Christmas, and Meg said a waffle maker," he revealed.

Harry added: "So she sent us a waffle maker for Archie, so breakfast now Meg makes up a beautiful organic mix, in the waffle maker, flip it, out it comes. He loves it. And now I have waffles for breakfast, bit of yoghurt, bit of jam on top. I don't know if that's the right thing to do. Berries, bit of honey."

James seemed confused and interrupted Harry, saying: "Sorry you're glossing over the fact that I cannot for the life of me imagine the Queen ordering a waffle maker to be sent to Santa Barbara. I can't get my head around it."

Harry replied: "I don't even know how to comment on that. Archie wakes up in the morning and literally just goes 'waffle?'."

Meghan joined the Royal Family for Christmas for the first time back in 2017 and she reportedly "played a blinder" with her gift for the Queen. The royals have their own special tradition which sees them open gifts at afternoon tea on Christmas Eve. And the cheaper the gifts, the better.

According to royal expert Richard Kay: "Harry once gave his grandmother a pair of rubber gloves for doing the dishes — I mean, really quite bizarre presents. Meghan would have found that as extraordinary as a certain Diana Spencer on her first Christmas buying lavish gifts for her in-laws. She never made that mistake again."

But, Meghan was more clued up than Diana when it came to royal Christmas traditions. Speaking on the 2021 Channel 5 documentary, Harry & Meghan Vs The Monarchy, Simon Vigar, royal correspondent for 5 News, said: "Meghan played a blinder on her first Christmas. She got a toy - a singing hamster - for the Queen and apparently she loved it…and so did the corgis."
