An elderly man who was hit by a car while walking his dog has died four days later in hospital.

The 88-year-old, who has not yet been named, was out walking his pet on the A768 in Loanhead, Midlothian, when they were struck by a Honda Civic on Tuesday, police said. Emergency services were called to the scene and the man was rushed to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

His dog has sadly also died of injuries incurred in the crash. Police Scotland said the male driver of the Honda was uninjured in the collision.

Officers said they were now looking for any witnesses to the crash. Sergeant Grant Hastie of the force's Road Policing Unit said: “Our investigation into the circumstances of this collision are ongoing and our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends at this difficult time. We would urge anyone who may have information which not yet been passed to police to come forward.

“In particular we are working to identify two people who were at a bus stop near where the incident happened at the time and would urge them to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland through 101 with reference number 0499 of 19 December.”
