Princess Diana and Kevin Costner got to know each other through the development of a sequel for The Bodyguard

Kevin Costner opened up about his brief friendship with Princess Diana before her untimely death.

The actor admitted he was working on a sequel for the 1992 movie The Bodyguard, keeping Diana in mind. Her character would be pursued and surrounded by paparazzi as his character aimed to keep her safe. They were set to develop a romance. However, he received the script one day before Diana's 1997 car crash.

During the development of the film, Kevin and Diana were in contact and formed a bond which Sarah Ferguson facilitated. In their conversations, she opened up about some of her concerns.

He explained to People: “I just remember her being incredibly sweet on the phone, and she asked the question, she goes, ‘Are we going to have like a kissing scene?’ She said it in a very respectful way. She was nervous because her life was very governed. And I said, ‘Yeah, there’s going to be a little bit of that, but we can make that okay too.'”

The Yellowstone actor complimented Sarah's role in making this arrangement work, adding: "I always respect Sarah because she’s the one that set up the conversation between me and Diana. She was the one that set it up, and she never said, ‘Well, what about me? I’m a princess too.’ She was just so supportive of the idea.”

Following Diana's death, the concept for a sequel was brushed to the side. However, now Kevin might be revisiting the idea with a new (former) royal in mind — Meghan Markle. An insider previously told New Idea magazine: "The only thing Kevin loves more than an underdog like Meghan is a box office hit."

Meghan made a dramatic exit from Hollywood acting after marrying Prince Harry to focus on her royal obligations. Now that the pair have stepped away from the royal label and moved to the United States, she may be venturing back into the entertainment world.

After all, a glimpse into Meghan and Harry's 2024 plans already indicated that the pair may be embracing their Hollywood stardom as they have their sights on a potential new home in Los Angeles.
