Two young boys had to be rescued after crawling into a storm drainage system and getting stuck in the maze of tunnels.

The youngsters were reportedly stuck in the tunnels for several hours before being freed.

Residents in the suburb of Pooraka in Adelaide, South Australia, raised the alarm after hearing their cries for help on Monday afternoon.

It's understood the boys - believed to be aged 12 and 13 - had crawled into the labyrinth of tunnels through an opening at Mawson Lakes, another suburb of the city, with the pair later discovered about 1.5km from where they entered the system.

Incredibly, both were freed without injuries.

Neighbours told 9News of their astonishment at the dangerous mistake, particularly given Australians are currently in the height of summer with temperatures edging above 34C.

"It's really crazy, why did they do that? It's very hot today," one resident said.

"Kids are kids, are they running from something or is it just a game for them?" another said.

"If they were young boys, no doubt that concrete lid's very heavy."

South Australian authorities have since issued a warning to locals not to attempt the same.
