Ex-Arsenal star Jermaine Pennant has urged his former employers to sign Ivan Toney - describing the England international as the "guy who could win them the title".

Arsenal are interested in signing Toney, but he won't come cheap. Brentford are expected to demand up to £100million for the 27-year-old striker, who scored 20 Premier League goals last season. He will enter the final 18 months of his contract in January.

Toney hasn't played a first-team game this season after receiving an eight-month ban from the Football Association for breaching their betting rules. That suspension ends next month, which explains Arsenal's interest. Chelsea are also keen on the prolific star.

The Gunners are aiming to end a 20-year wait to win the Premier League title this season. They are top of the table, one point clear of Liverpool in second and Aston Villa in third. Crucially, they have a five-point cushion on title favourites Manchester City.

Although Arsenal have started their campaign well, they do not have a prolific centre-forward. Eddie Nketiah and Bukayo Saka are their leading scorers in the Premier League this season with five goals each. Gabriel Jesus has just three strikes to his name.

In comparison, Erling Haaland has scored 14 goals for City and Mohamed Salah has found the net 11 times for Liverpool (in the league). Even Villa have a goalscorer in Ollie Watkins, who has scored nine Premier League goals to lead their unlikely title charge.

That is why Pennant wants Arsenal to sign Toney. "I think he would be a perfect fit for Arsenal," Pennant told Genting Casino. "He is a real worker off the ball, he likes to run in behind and he can hold up the ball well. We all know his ability in front of the goal.

"Everyone has suggested that Ivan Toney could be the missing piece of the Arsenal puzzle and I do really believe that he is the guy that could win them win the title."

The Gunners are also considering a move for Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke. The former Liverpool and Chelsea star, 26, has scored nine Premier League goals this season to remind Gareth Southgate of his quality ahead of Euro 2024 in Germany.

Pennant thinks Toney can follow in the footsteps of Ian Wright. The Gunners legend scored 185 goals in 288 games for the club between 1991 and 1998. Pennant added: "I think he could come into the club and become Arsenal’s modern version of Ian Wright.

"He’s a brilliant player and I think he’s been performing well for the last three seasons. On goals alone, then only Harry Kane ranks higher than him in terms of English players over the last few seasons. That’s not bad company for Toney to keep.

"He’s a proven goal scorer in the Premier League with Brentford. Imagine the number of chances he would get playing for a team like Arsenal. I think Ivan Toney to Arsenal is a recipe for great success."
