A popular BBC show is returning to our screens following the success of its first series.

The new Survivor series has been renewed for another series after pulling in three million viewers each week and beating Antiques Roadshow in TV ratings. The reboot show - hosted by The Masked Singer host Joel Dommett - crowned its first winner on Saturday, December 16, with contestant Matthew beating his rivals to the crown.

Speaking about his win following the game, Matthew told BBC Radio Cumbria: "I don't think it will ever sink in. I was in tears [when it was announced] and thinking about my friends and family at home.

"It's four or five months since it was filmed and only me and my mam and dad knew [I'd won]. We had a little party at my house on Saturday and all my friends were shocked. I'll always remember the look on their faces when I was announced as the winner."

Survivor received mixed reviews from critics and viewers. While it proved a hit with some viewers, others threatened to switch off after finding the show 'boring.' The BBC is said to have reportedly splashed £30 million on reviving the show after the show failed to find a strong audience when it first aired back in 2001.

The reality series sees contestants stranded on a remote island fight their way through various trials in hopes of winning the huge £100,000 cash prize. They are split into two tribes and are tasked to compete against each other to gain a reward or immunity from being voted off the island. It was first hosted by journalist Mark Austin and originally premiered on ITV.

Viewers can apply to appear on the new series through the show's official casting website. The deadline for applications is February 16, 2024. The website says: "BBC One’s Survivor is actively casting for a potential second series and we are looking for a new wave of fearless castaways and strategic masterminds who would be interested in being considered for the chance to play the ultimate physical and psychological game.

Describing the show, BBC's Director of Unscripted Kate Phillips said: "Survivor is a global television hit and to be able to bring one of TV’s most successful formats to audiences in the UK in a uniquely BBC way is a very exciting prospect indeed."
