A man has been arrested after police claim he cut off his wife's head with a sword because she was five minutes late making him his morning cup of tea.

The suspect, named only as Dharamveer, allegedly killed his wife Sundari with a sword in their home in the village of Faljagadh, in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. The vegetable seller is accused of stabbing the woman 15 times before brutally beheading her in their family home.

The barbaric attack happened a few miles from the capital Delhi on Tuesday, police say. The 52-year-old got annoyed when she failed to bring up his brew after he had woken. He grew angry at the 50-year-old due to the wait and a furious argument broke out.

According to local media, he carried out the attack because she was taking too long to make his drink. They claim the pair beginning to argue in a row that then escalated before turning deadly. Their couple's son, named as Soldier was also allegedly knifed moments later.

Hearing her screams, he reportedly rushed to the scene. Soldier later told Indian media that his father had become angry over tea before and often shouted at his mother, but had never hit her. Villagers, alerted by the cries, also ran to their home and found Sundari lying dead in a pool of blood. The police were called and Sundari's body was taken away for autopsy.

The force confirmed a suspect was arrested. Police Superintendent Vivek Yadav told the Times of India that Sundari awoke in the morning and had begun preparing the tea, just like she did every day. Her husband woke up minutes later and called out to her for the drink, he said, as the couple's four children slept in another room.

"After around five minutes, Dharamveer asked for tea again and rushed to the makeshift kitchen on the terrace. He got angry when his wife told him it would take another 10 minutes for the tea to get ready and kicked the utensils away," the force spokesman said.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Gyan Prakash Rai said: "Dharamveer and Sundari had a fight over making tea. He then took out a sharp weapon and attacked her on the neck from behind, which led to her immediate death." They confirmed that their investigation is ongoing.
