And just like that, Christmas is only days away. The shopping is almost done and work is starting to wind down, so what better time to get in the spirit with a few festive films.

Every year, many of us see in the season of goodwill with Christmas favourites like Elf, Love Actually and The Muppets Christmas Carol. But if you’ve had enough of the family-friendly classics and are in the mood for something different this time round, there’s nothing quite like Violent Night.

The outlandish Christmas action-comedy takes place on Christmas Eve as a team of mercenaries breaks into a wealthy family compound, taking everyone inside hostage. But their plans are upended thanks to an unexpected guest, Santa Claus, who embarks on a bloody battle against the home invaders – who just so happen to be on the naughty list.

From Norwegian director Tommy Wirkola and Sonic the Hedgehog screenwriters Patrick Casey and Josh Miller, the bloody flick stars Stranger Things’ David Harbour as Saint Nick himself, alongside John Wick’s John Leguizamo and National Lampoon’s Beverly D’Angelo. The 106-minute film was warmly received by both critics and general audiences upon its December 2022 release, grossing more than $76 million against a $20 million budget.

In January – within weeks of the film’s general release – it was announced that a sequel was officially in the works, TheWrap reported. But before then, Violent Night is available to watch at home, but where is it showing and how suitable it is for younger viewers?

What is Violent Night’s age rating certificate in the UK?

Here in the UK, the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) determines the age ratings of films and TV shows based on what content is shown on screen. The BBFC takes various factors into account when assigning an age rating to a film or show, including foul language, violence and depictions of alcohol or drug use.

The BBFC has given Violent Night a 15 age rating, meaning it may be unsuitable for children under 15 years of age. This is because the film features scenes of violence – such as shootings and stabbings – and injury which are shown in “bloody [and] gory detail.”

However, the BBFC has said that much of the violence is “comic in nature with fantastical and stylised overtones.” The film also includes strong language throughout along with occasional “crude references” to sex.

Is Violent Night on Netflix?

Sadly for Netflix members, Violent Night is not available to stream on Netflix. But the streaming giant does offer a host of other festive films, including How the Grinch Stole Christmas and The Holiday, plus some brand-new blockbusters like Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget, Maestro and Rebel Moon.

But for those of us here in the UK, don’t fear, as there’s still ways to watch Violent Night this Christmas.
