It was a star-studded display of glitz and glam at Tuesday night's prestigious BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards.

Famous faces flocked to MediaCityUK in Salford as goalkeeper Mary Earps, Olympic swimmer Rebecca Adlington and former professional footballer Alex Scott led the arrivals on the red carpet - but fans were immediately divided over Alex's daring gown choice.

The former England footballer, 39, presented Tuesday evening's show alongside Gary Lineker, Gabby Logan and Clare Balding and Alex ensured that her ensemble would turn heads and garner attention thanks to the loud red tones of her dress and the eye-catching deep plunge neckline.

Alex modelled the show-stopping full-length, long-sleeve gown which featured an open cutaway chest and a neck collar and she completed the all red ensemble with a pair of sky high stilettos. The football favourite finished off the look with a sleek hairstyle and a full face of glamorous makeup.

While some fans of the former sports star gushed over her daring fiery red dress, others were less than impressed as a comments war broke out on social media over her fashion choice for the prestigious event as some deemed her look as 'inappropriate'.

As the ceremony got underway, dozens of viewers flocked to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share their reactions. One unimpressed viewer wrote: "You dressed like you are going to a cocktail party. Inappropriate dress choice for a tv programme at 7pm when children are still watching TV."

Another complained: "Alex Scott's dress? Really? Slightly tasteless in my opinion." Someone else echoed: "Not a fan of Alex Scott's look tonight. It really doesn't do anything for her - she's such a beautiful woman. There was no need to show off so much." However, others jumped to Alex's defense, insisting that she was a 'style icon' for choosing to wear such a daring dress.

"People hating on Alex Scott are just jealous because they could never pull off such an iconic look. What a style icon she is," one fan swooned. While another agreed: "Don't understand why people seem to have such a problem with Alex!! Her dress isn't even that revealing."

"Love love LOVE Alex Scott's dress! This lady never fails to look sensational," someone else gushed. While another viewer added: "Agreed. She's stunning and red is most definitely her colour. Get it girl." And another fan of Alex's quipped: "Another day, another red carpet event, another slay from Alex Scott."

Alex's girlfriend, singer Jess Glynne also joined her at the gala to support her from the VIP seats. Hold My Hand singer Jess, 34, posted a rare photo with Alex in the sport stars dressing as the loved-up couple appeared to get ready together. It comes one month after the pair officially confirmed their romance by making their first red carpet debut.

Before going Instagram official, Alex and Jess sparked speculation that they were together as they appeared at the same events on a number of occasions over the past few months, including the Attitude Awards and the after party for David and Victoria Beckham's Netflix docu-series premiere. The two have also been seen grabbing coffee together in North London, where Jess is originally from.
