Apple TV+ is gearing up to drop a new crime drama that will start next year’s TV slate with a bang. Launching early in the new year, Criminal Record promises to be an action-packed thriller that boasts a stellar cast led by a beloved Doctor Who star.

The Apple Original crime thriller centres on a pair of detectives at opposite stages in their career as they’re thrust into a tug of war over a high-profile murder case. Criminal Record comes from BAFTA-nominated Indian Summers creator Paul Rutman, and is billed as a “powerful, character-driven drama” set in the heart of contemporary London.

The series is directed by BAFTA-winner Jim Loach and The Devil’s Hour’s Shaun James Grant. Here, we break down everything you need to know about Criminal Record.

What is Criminal Record about?

In Criminal Record, an anonymous phone call draws two brilliant detectives into a confrontation over an old murder case – one a young woman in the early stages of her career, the other a well-connected and grizzled man determined to protect his legacy. The series touches on issues of race, institutional failure and the quest to find common ground in a polarised Britain.

Who is in the cast of Criminal Record?

Criminal Record is led by Oscar and BAFTA winner Peter Capaldi. The Scottish actor is best-known as the twelfth incarnation of Doctor Who and as Malcolm Tucker from the political satire The Thick of It.

He stars alongside Olivier and Critics Choice Award nominee Cush Jumbo. The British actress starred as attorney Lucca Quinn in The Good Wife and as Lois Habiba in the third series of Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood.

They are joined by War of the Worlds’ Stephen Campbell Moore, Wild Bill’s Charlie Creed-Miles, The Woman in Black’s Shaun Dooley and The Doll Factory’s Aysha Kala. Rounding out the cast is BAFTA TV Award-winning Help actress Cathy Tyson, Harry Potter’s Zoë Wanamaker and Queenie’s Dionne Brown.

When is Criminal Record released?

The eight-episode series will make its global debut with a two episode drop on Wednesday, January 10. This will be followed by one new episode every Friday until the finale on February 21.

How to watch Criminal Record for free

Criminal Record will be available to stream exclusively on Apple TV+. This means that to watch the series from launch, viewers will need a subscription to Apple TV+, which also includes hit shows like the Godzilla spin-off Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks’ upcoming WWII epic Masters of the Air.
