A man who converted an old motor to make himself a home to avoid the capital's outrageous house prices reckons he's saved £1,000 a month.

George Burke, 28, bought an old RAF Series 3 Land Rover and spent £4,000 turning it into a place to stay so he could slash his monthly outgoings and save for a deposit on a bricks-and-mortar abode. The savvy IT worker reckons it will be just a matter of months before he has he cash he needs to get on the extortionate London property ladder.

The iconic Brit vehicle cost him £5,500 but the savings he has taken in since have made the whole project well worth the money and work, given that before he took on the project, a massive proportion of his earnings were spent on accommodation, despite him living a "minimal life".

George, from Hereford, called the Land Rover 'Dennis' and said: "My London bills equated to a large portion of my monthly salary and I wanted a change and financial security. My rent was £920 per month, which I am now saving every month, as I live a very minimal life with so few costs and unnecessary items. I am on track to save for a house deposit within a matter of months thanks to the Land Rover."

He was forced to move back in with his parents during the coronavirus pandemic and while living at home he was able to save enough money to buy the Land Rover he had always wanted. Before converting the vehicle into a camper van, he says that the truck required mechanical and bodywork attention to ensure longevity. He spent a lot of time restoring the chassis and electrical wiring, and once it was mechanically ready, he started the conversion into a lightweight camper van.

The current cost-of-living crisis was a huge motivator for George to continue with his conversion project and he added: "Owning the Land Rover camper and putting in years of solo work, working most weekends and long evenings, has awarded me with freedom – both financially and physically.

"I am able to work remotely in some incredible locations with only a few bills to pay – the largest being the diesel. I appreciate the simple things such as working out and the countryside. I live a very minimal life with little costs and unnecessary items. I sold a lot of my possessions before moving into the Land Rover as you have to be considerate of the limited amount of space and I end up saving even more money because of this."
