Joe Alywn has been praised for supporting the people of Palestine as pressure mounts on his ex Taylor Swift to speak out.

Social media users have vowed to defend the actor “next time Swifties attack him” following his vocal support for Palestine, with others pointing out Joe’s famous ex has so far failed to use her enormous platform to speak out about what’s currently happening in the Middle East.

The Conversations With Friends actor, 32, has supported calls for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas for several weeks now and was one of the first celebrities to sign an open letter in October, urging President Biden to “call for and facilitate a ceasefire without delay – an end to the bombing of Gaza, and the safe release of hostages.”

Joe, who split from Taylor in April after six years of dating, took to social media on Wednesday night (U.K time) to share a link to an article titled “We are no strangers to human suffering, but we’ve seen nothing like the siege of Gaza” with his 1.1million Instagram followers.

The British actor’s Instagram Story update comes as his ex-girlfriend faces intense criticism from some fans after releasing her "Eras Tour" concert film to stream on demand in Israel.

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement, a Palestinian-led movement promoting boycotts, divestments, and economic sanctions against Israel, called on Taylor and Beyonce not to allow their concert films to be screened in Israel “while its military is committing what 36 UN experts, as well as Israeli, Palestinian and international legal experts, including genocide scholars, agree is a 'genocide in the making’.”

Many of Taylor’s fans have noted their idol’s lack of statement regarding Palestine and called on the Shake It Off singer to speak out, particularly in the wake of being named Time’s Person of the Year 2023 at the start of this month. “Taylor Swift being the most influential person on the planet currently and her not saying a word about Palestine and then gracing the cover of Person of the Year which should’ve been given to Journalists fighting their ppl/their own lives, is unholy levels of sinister,” one wrote on Twitter (X) earlier this month.

“I really do not care about Taylor Swift anymore. I care about Palestine,” another upset fan of the singer tweeted, with a third adding: “Taylor Swift’s words have a MAJOR impact on everything. she is doing more harm by being silent about Palestine, I hope she remembers that she wants to be on the right side of history and speaks up.”

Following Joe’s Instagram update on Wednesday, social media users took to various sites across the internet to praise the University of Bristol graduate for taking a stand and highlighting what is happening in Palestine. “I will be defending him next time the swifties attack him for no valid reason” one wrote on Reddit, with another adding: “He’s probably going to struggle to book more roles as it already is—which is why I believe this is more so commendable. If this man only cared about his career he wouldn’t be doing this.”

One Reddit user pointed out Joe’s family connection to Palestine activism, writing: “His great uncle was a peace activist and a patron of the Palestinian solidarity campaign. His name was Bruce Kent if anyone is interested for further information. They had a close relationship.”

It’s thought more than 18,000 Palestinians have been killed since October, with reports suggesting 70% of fatalities have been women and children. Israel has been carrying out air strikes and attacks across Palestine since a Hamas attack on Israel on 7 October which Israeli officials say took the lives of 1,200 people. Another 240 Israelis were taken hostage by Hamas but some were released during a brief truce last month.

Joe isn’t the only household name calling for a ceasefire and urging British and American politicians to intervene as we witness “devastating loss of lives and unfolding horrors in Israel and Palestine.” The latest Artists For Ceasefire open letter to Joe Biden calls on the President of the United States “and all world leaders, to honour all of the lives in the Holy Land and call for and facilitate a ceasefire without delay – an end to the bombing of Gaza, and the safe release of hostages.”

The letter’s signatories include Joe, Jennifer Lopez, Succession actors Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong, Alan Cumming, John Cusack, Andrew Garfield, Susan Sarandon, Tom Hardy, Derry Girls star Nicola Coughlan and many more.

“We believe that the United States can play a vital diplomatic role in ending the suffering and we are adding our voices to those from the US Congress, UNICEF, Doctors without Borders, The International Committee of The Red Cross, and so many others,” an extract of the letter reads. “Saving lives is a moral imperative. To echo UNICEF, “Compassion — and international law — must prevail.”

The letter continued to include a quote from UNICEF spokesperson James Elder, which reads: “Children and families in Gaza have practically run out of food, water, electricity, medicine and safe access to hospitals, following days of air strikes and cuts to all supply routes. Gaza’s sole power plant ran out of fuel Wednesday afternoon, shutting down electricity, water and wastewater treatment. Most residents can no longer get drinking water from service providers or household water through pipelines.... The humanitarian situation has reached lethal lows, and yet all reports point to further attacks. Compassion — and international law — must prevail.”
