Two brothers have died aged only four and eight after a horrific crash with a BMW which was doing 100mph while fleeing police.

Mason and Malikai Orozco-Romero, four and eight respectively, were travelling with their mum and aunt to the shops on December 8 when the stolen BMW flew into them at high speed. The BMW was allegedly being driven by Angel Velasquez Salgado, 20, in San Diego, California.

The family’s Honda and the BMW were both sent spinning down an embankment by the highway and hit a tree - which fell onto the Honda as it erupted in a blaze. Tragically the boy’s mother, Victoria Romero, is too severely injured to be notified about her sons’ devastating deaths.

Salgado survived and fled the scene but was arrested by police who charged him with two counts of murder, a hit and run causing death, vehicular manslaughter and evading the police. Salgado allegedly does not even hold a driving licence - but the young man denies any wrongdoing.

All four passengers in the Honda were immediately taken to hospital but the brothers were declared dead. The boys’ aunt is in a critical condition while their mother could end up being paralysed by the horror crash.

"I’m just torn up,” said the siblings’ grandmother, Karla Villa, to local media. "My life is not the same and it will not be the same after this. Even though I have my daughter, I just feel like it’s not the same. I feel like in between, I’m alive and I’m dead."

She said her daughter had lived a “really tough life” but she had been “making it through” despite the battles she faced. "Her kids were that support for her to be strong with this illness and now that they’re gone, I don’t know how she’s going to get through all this."

Brittany Phommavong, godmother of the brothers, has set up a GoFundMe to get help with funeral expenses and medical bills. The page reads: "I would like to raise enough to send them off the best way possible they didn’t deserve this, already having been through so much losing their Father Tyrone Orozco last year Dec 2022.

"Their mother had been diagnosed with lupus since she was 11 years old, just about a couple years ago she fell very ill, ever since then she has been fighting everyday to keep up with her kids. If there is any money left over it will go to Victoria's medical bills and expenses.

"Everyone who knows these kids knows no matter what they were going through they always carried a beautiful smile on their face. This tragedy isn’t fair. I'm really lost for words Ijust appreciate everyone’s love and support. Anything is appreciated,” it added. The GoFundMe has so far raised just over half of its $40,000 target.
