Police have declared a major incident at an industrial estate in South Wales with local A&E services warning people to stay away this evening - with one person still unaccounted for.

Police have sealed off Treforest Industrial Estate, Rhondda Cynon Taf, after the blast on Wednesday evening which neighbours said caused their homes to shake and windows to rattle. Smoke can be seen billowing from miles away from the site.

It's believed the explosion occurred at a fitness business on the estate, leaving the building's facade "completely destroyed". Local councillor Karl Johnson told Sky News it happened at Mindset Functional Fitness Ltd, and also impacted a nearby car dealership.

The roads will be closed around the area of Treforest Industrial Estate and is expected to remain closed for some time. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes where possible."

Meanwhile local NHS bosses said A&E staff were on high alert with multiple ambulances seen arriving at the scene. Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board said: "Due to the ongoing incident at Treforest Ind Estate this evening, all of our emergency departments are currently on high alert. Please help us by not attending A&E unless absolutely necessary. We need to be able to provide care to those who need it the most."

Jonny Foxhall, 36, the owner of nearby music venue Green Rooms, told PA: "Our front door was flung open so we went out to see what had happened. We could see a smoke cloud and an orange glow from above the treeline quickly followed by flames."
He added: "To feel the shockwave from the explosion is something I've never experienced before."

Residents described feeling homes "shake" in the blast

People living near to the industrial estate told local media they felt their walls shake and windows rattle, with one football team thinking a firework had gone off as they trained nearby.

Local football coach Charlotte Preen told Wales Online: "The building shook, and a lot of moisture came from the ceiling. It was very strong. Some of the players were quite concerned, obviously realising it sounded a bit louder than a firework. We've been updated that there was some form of serious explosion in the industrial estate. Parents found it really difficult to pick up their children [after the session], unfortunately."
