Billy Sharp tells Ben Foster why he slammed Wrexham before U-turn
Billy Sharp disclosed why he slammed Wrexham before being open to moving to the Welsh club.
The 37-year-old is currently a free agent having last played for MLS club LA Galaxy in October, where he scored six goals in eight games. But while he was playing for Sheffield United last season, he came up against Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney -owned Wrexham in the fourth round of the FA Cup. The teams contested an entertaining 3-3 draw at the Racecourse Ground in January of this year, before ‘The Blades’ prevailed 3-1 in the replay at Bramall Lane in February.
During this period the club were filming the hit Netflix documentary series ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ when Sharp clashed with the League Two club’s players, staff and camera crew. The incident took place after the game when Sharp, who scored a goal to put United 2-1 ahead in the 94th minute, won the Match of the Match award. Sharing what happened on ‘ Fozcast – The Ben Foster Podcast ’ with former Wrexham goalkeeper Ben Foster, Sharpe began: “I got Man of the Match. I had to go straight on and right to this room.

Ryan Reynolds mispronounces name of new Wrexham signing in hilarious video“There were loads of cameras for the documentary. So I’m trying to go straight on and up the stairs, it gets tighter. The Wrexham players think ‘what’s he doing, he should be going left’. I get that. This camera guy shoots out, probably didn’t think I was coming because he thought I was going left as well. I nearly fall over him and push him out the way. The Wrexham lads kicked off a little bit.”
Sharp was seen arguing with Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson on the pitch after the game and as the striker said it continued off the pitch as he slated Parkinson in his post-match interview. Off the pitch, things escalated to the extent that Sharp made a comment about the documentary series that did not make Reynolds and McElhenney happy.
"There were too many people there and nobody knew what was going on,” Sharp added. "Robbo [Jack Robinson] has come in, a few other people. There’s shouting, handbags, nothing really happened. I said it would probably make good TV and they put it in the documentary. I said ‘stick that up your documentary’s a**e’, or something like that, and I had a laugh as I said it.
“A few more are having a go. I darted in my little place where I had this interview. I probably shouldn’t have done it, I should have calmed down as emotions are high and things were just being said.” In the second season of 'Welcome to Wrexham’, the Wrexham owners fired back at Sharp, and they were brutally honest about what they thought of the player.
"It was really interesting. It was psychology 1 on 1. It was like 'oh we own you right now.' You're a Championship team, and second place in the Championship, you guys are amazing," said Reynolds. "And this guy we just got under his skin. It was so, so wonderful to see that we got under that guy's skin the way he did." McElhenney added: "We were living rent-free in that motherf*cker's brain." Since their intense FA Cup clash earlier in the year, Wrexham were promoted to League Two after winning the National League.
They are currently second in English football’s fourth division, six points behind leaders Stockport with a game in hand. While speaking on William Hill's 'No Tippy Tappy Football' podcast, despite his frosty relationship with the Wrexham, Sharpe, who is currently without a club, revealed he is open to signing for the club. "Wrexham are doing really well, fair play to them," he said. "I don't hold grudges. If that were one of my better options, why not."
