Nigel Farage has been confirmed to be back in the UK following his I'm A Celebrity stint, after making a strange dig at winner Sam Thompson.

The former UKIP leader lost Sunday night's final, where he went up against ex-boxer Tony Bellew and Made in Chelsea star Sam, who came first. Nigel came last with just 25.6 per cent of the public vote - a feeling the serial election loser is likely to be familiar with.

He landed back at Heathrow Airport, gushing about how his 23 nights in the jungle were the "biggest detox", but an Instagram video he posted with winner Sam had already caused a backlash amongst his followers.

During an Instagram video taken after the show's final, Nigel took a cringe-worthy swipe at Sam about "hugging men". The Partridge-esque comment was made while the pair were embracing each other, after Nigel told Sam he "knew" he would win. Farage then added to the camera: "See, he hugs men. Very, very odd."

The attempted joke fell flat with fans, who slammed Farage for being 'insecure' about his sexuality.

One fan commented: "Nothing wrong with a man hugging another man Nigel, it’s good to show the love," while another asked: "Why is it odd for men to hug men?" A third follower wrote: "Nigel ain’t very secure in his sexuality."

On his arrival back to the UK, Farage reflected on his time Down Under, telling PA: "(I did) 23 nights in the jungle and by the end of that I was 20 years older than all the other contestants that were left. So all I would say is the whole thing was much more physical than I could ever have believed, even ferrying buckets of water up from the pump to the camp, all of that is the biggest detox.

"No tea, no coffee, no booze, lots of exercise, so after 23 nights in there I’ve left it in many ways fitter and stronger than I’ve probably been since I was at school. So there’s a real upside to it."

And it's straight back into politics for the right-wing populist, who although he's had a "super" time, wants to get stuck into rallying the troops. The self-titled 'Mr Brexit' added: "I think the news agenda is going to be busy… and if my popularity has risen 20 per cent amongst Conservative voters in Britain, well, there’s an audience that might want to listen."

Farage mocked Sam when speaking to The Mirror and other press after his eviction from the jungle, saying: "Sam isn't lazy, he's absolutely hopeless! He's utterly funny and charming and the nicest eight-year-old I've ever met."

He added: "And Sam has a boyish enthusiasm for life which is utterly irrepressible and he and I got on famously."
