I'm A Celebrity's Nigel Farage in furious clash with ITV bosses over rule break

His personality and body was laid bare for all to see in the I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here jungle.

But Nigel Farage has told how he clashed with ITV bosses over his decision to shower naked - and he refused to cover up despite their complaints. Viewers - and female campmates Josie Gibson and Danielle Harold - were shocked to see the Brexit campaigner stripped off in the jungle shower. But Farage claimed it was with good reason. Speaking to the Mirror and other press, he said: "There are three points I need to make about my bottom. I couldn’t care less, I am the least shy person you will ever meet."

He said: "The day before we went in, the doctor told us that personal hygiene was really important. They said you will be in there for a long time and you really need to make sure that you are clean, otherwise things will go wrong. The day I did it, it was lashing with rain. Leeches will crawl up your leg and embed themselves in the warmest part of your body."

He went on to say: "Sam did not shower naked and Sam did not check himself. Sam woke up one morning screaming. Sam had it on his arse and the sleeping bag looked like a murder scene. The leech was huge. To be told to check yourself and to be told you must keep clean – and then to be told you can’t take your pants off in the shower struck me as contradictory."

He added: "I had a huge row. I was told in the interest of taste and in respect for the cameramen and women that I shouldn’t be doing this. I said, ‘Go to hell!’ I am doing this for those two reasons and I will check myself for leeches every day. So there were very good reasons. Afterwards my other campmates did the same. Four other blokes stripped naked."

Farage, 59, also revealed ITV had messed up with a drinking trial Down Your Sorrows on day seven which he did with Tony Bellew. Farage insisted he had made them change it midway through the challenge because it was too tough and claimed they would never repeat the trial in the way they had to do it because it was dangerous for their health.

He explained: "The drinking challenge was a nightmare they will never repeat. They know they got it wrong. They made us seriously ill. Tony was throwing up all afternoon and all evening. He was chucking his guts up. I was - and this was one of the biggest piss-takes in camp - I was lying there propped up against the log for hours going, 'bleurghhh'. They all took the piss out of me. they were all going, 'Chuck it up. You'll be far better chucking it up'. And I didn't chuck it up. I probably should have chucked it up really. I should have probably done that."

He added: "Tony was spewing for hours. They had doctors watching and psychologists watching a lot. It wasn't drinks, it was more like porridge. The first drink I had, you could have poured it upside down quickly and it wouldn't have fallen out. I said to Ant and Dec, after three, I said, 'Alright...I quite like a pint but... you told me this was a time unlimited trial."

He then continued: "So I'm going to drink all six. Tony might end up in hospital but I'm going to drink all six. But you might be here till three o'clock because I cannot take the weight of this heavy stuff'. So what they did is they liquefied the last three pints so they were less stodgy. I necked all of the last three and I think they got that trial wrong and they will never repeat it."

Despite him being king of the jungle, Farage also couldn't resist mocking Sam Thompson a little bit, whilst also discussing chats they had which didn't make the edit. He said: "Sam isn't lazy, he's absolutely hopeless! He's utterly funny and charming and the nicest eight-year-old I've ever met."

Farage said: "And Sam has a boyish enthusiasm for life which is utterly irrepressible and he and I got on famously. And in fact, we also had serious conversations. He's a fanatic about the ancient Greeks and you won't have seen this. I'm a 20th century historian so we sat for hours, where I'd ask him questions about ancient Greece and he'd ask me questions about tank battles in the first World War in 1918 and we had a great time."

He explained: "Sam was fantastic. In those rainy days - don't forget we had Grace leave, we had Jamie Lynn leave, we had a lightning storm where they gathered us into a hut - it was all pretty depressing. The end of my bed was literally drenched night after night. My socks were wet and I got blisters. It wasn't easy. In the middle of all that, Sam was a complete God send. So I love Sam. I also enjoyed teasing Sam."

One person Farage did clash with was First Dates star Fred Sirieix who argued over Brexit and immigration. But the pair also discussed other things which were not shown. Farage continued: "This is the problem, is that the biggest risk of signing this contract was the edit. Fred and I had three big debates about Russia where he kept saying. 'You're funded by the Russians', and I didn't use the f-word but I was pretty heated and damning in my response. There are decent human beings like Fred that believe I've been funded by the Kremlin. It's a little bit like the, 'When did you stop beating your wife?' question. These things get thrown at you and it's very hard to answer."

He added: "But actually the truth is, Fred and I worked together incredibly well. The only place in the camp, when we had to get the thing moving, it was Fred, myself and Marvin that really took on the hard work. The others wandered around."

Farage hinted he could be tempted to stand at the next General Election for the Conservatives but only if Rishi Sunak was no longer in charge. He said again in our interview there was a "cat in hell's chance" in the current set up. But asked if Boris Johnson could get him back in the party, he said: "I haven’t checked my messages yet and I have 6000. If there is one from Boris I will find it and give him a ring. If Boris wanted to reach out and if we really believed that the role of government was to get out of the way and let men and women set up businesses and create wealth – then I will have a chat with him"

He added: "I think the whole axis of government has moved towards state controls, Labour would be no better than the conservatives in my opinion. When it comes to politics, never say never of course. I have never wanted in politics to have a job for a title, or a rank or a position. I only joined politics all those years ago to make change and Brexit was a fundamental change. It may not have been carried out very well but at least we did it. If I did it again I would have to believe that I could be the instigator of real change in a country that I think is, in some ways, sclerotic. I don’t see how I can do that between now and the next general election so I think people may be getting too excited."

Farage, who spent 23 days in camp and lost 7 pounds in weight, went on to dub Grant Shapps a "cretin" and Rishi Sunak a "lame duck walking". By contrast he could not speak highly enough about an unlikely new friend - actor Danielle Harold.

He said: "Danielle was absolutely fantastic and so kind. She knew a bit of my medical backstory. She knew a bit about the plane crash and car crash and all the things that have happened to me. I'm actually physically quite well, but I was carrying injuries. My right side usage and my balance, they're not as they ought to be. I'm nearly 68 though. She was very protective. She would say 'no I will do the washing for you' and ran the bath for me. She was such a lovely person."

He commented: "But I got on with lots of people really well. People like Marvin. His life and mine are completely different but we could talk for hours and how our lives were completely different yet in terms of our values, very very similar. But there were some conversations where I was an outsider because these guys were experts on music and film. But when it came to current affairs a lot of them were just not interested at all, but despite that gap i think we formed good friendships and good mutual respect for each other. The way the camp works and winning stars for dinner, it is an amazing experience. I went into it as an adventure and really I have loved it. I really have."
