Bryan Adams has opened up about his curious friendship with Princess Diana - and explained why he retired a song he wrote about her after she died.

The 64-year-old Canadian singer has been churning out tunes since 1980 - with his hits including the smash singles When You’re Gone, Please Forgive Me, and his number one hit (Everything I Do) I Do It For You. Back in 1984, he released a song titled Diana which was the B-side to his Top 40 track Heaven and is believed to be about Diana and her then-husband, King Charles.

The lyrics of the song drew attention as they reference a famous woman - and state: “The day that you married him - I nearly lost my mind.” The track drew attention from the late Princess Diana herself who struck up a friendship with Bryan - while rumours have persisted that they even engaged in an affair when he was in a supposedly committed relationship with Danish model Cecilie Thomsen.

After Diana died in a car accident in Paris in 1997 at the age of 36, Bryan decided to stop performing the song out of respect to the late Princess, and to her sons Prince William, 41, and Prince Harry, 39. Speaking to The Sunday Times, Bryan said he retired the song “out of respect” for Diana following her fatal car accident.

He also opened up about their unusual friendship, saying that they met on a plane and she later invited him round to her home, Kensington Palace, to drink tea after he sent a copy of his song to her. Bryan said: “I really, really liked Diana, she was an amazing woman and a super-great inspiration. Meeting her was truly one of the greatest things that ever happened to me.”

He claims he and the late Princess discussed his ‘Diana’ song, and claims he told her: “Yes, I know, very funny. Actually, I’d like to hear it again.” She then invited him over for tea after he sent a copy to her.

Bryan claims: “When I first went round to KP (Kensington Palace) she wasn’t, like ‘I really need to talk to somebody’, and you don’t bulldoze into someone’s life wanting to know everything in the first 10 minutes. It was ‘let’s have a cup of tea’. But later the more friendly we got the more I learnt what was really going on.”

While Bryan has never married, he was in a relationship with 49-year-old Cecilie in the 1990s, and then he dated his assistant Alicia Grimaldi whom he shares two daughters; Mirabella, 12 and Lula, 10. In 2003, Cecilie sensationally claimed her romance with Bryan was “a stormy relationship and Bryan's affair with Diana didn't make it any easier".

Diana was married to Prince Charle, who is now King Charles III, in 1981, but they divorced in 1996, a year before her fateful night in Paris.
