ITV's I'm A Celebrity returning to screens in days for special 'Coming Out' show

I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! might have suffered dire ratings with the 2023 season - but that won’t stop ITV bosses inflicting more of it on the viewing public.

Millions of TV fans opted not to tune in to the most recent season of the show as a questionable line-up of stars made their way into the jungle - and many vowed to boycott the show over the inclusion of controversial politician Nigel Farage, 59. There was also a backlash against the series as wildlife documentary maker Chris Packham, 62, slammed the show over animal cruelty and accused 48-year-old hosts Ant McPartlin and Declan Donnelly of picking money over morals as they continued to host the show that often sees insects and reptiles thrown onto celebrities for entertainment value.

Sunday night saw drew in four million less viewers than the last season finale as reality show fans saw Sam Thompson, 31, crowned king of the jungle ahead of runner up star Tony Bellew, 42, and third place star Farage. The 2023 season saw an average of 6.4 million viewers watching along - which is down from the 2022 season that drew in an impressive 10.9 million.

Far from being deterred from free falling interest in the series, ITV is to plough ahead with a special episode to air on Wednesday - sub titled ‘Coming Out’. The special will see winner Sam discuss his time in camp and will catch up with other stars from the lacklustre season - which saw Farage branded ‘boring’ by those working on the show as well as viewers. Ant and Dec will be on hand to present the one hour special, which will air from 9pm.

A synopsis of I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here! Coming Out reads: “A behind-the-scenes look at what happens when when winner Sam Thompson and the other contestants leave the jungle to return to VIP paradise.

“Featuring interviews with the stars' friends and family as they wait for their return and access all areas to the 2023 campers as they gather for a wrap party and reminisce on their time in the jungle. Ant and Dec present.”

The special will air after a season of disappointing ratings for ITV - which many have attributed to the inclusion of Farage who proved too toxic for many viewers to tune in to watch, and too boring for those that did. One unimpressed fan tweeted over the course of the three-week show: “That Farage is so boring to watch. He’s desperate for airtime, but I’m looking at my phone… as I’m bored watching the man.”

While a show source whispered to the Mirror that crew working on the show were also finding the politician - who was paid a reported £1.5 million to star on the 2023 season - dull. The source said: "People I know working on the show think Farage is one of the least interesting campmates ever. He is very boring and producers have struggled with fun storylines to show a different side to him. He’s good for Brexit and culture wars stuff, but outside of that, the local wildlife is more entertaining than he is."
