Bryan Adams was left blown away after a private audience with the late Diana, Princess of Wales.

The Canadian star and the late royal became friends after meeting on a plane. He's since said that his friendship with King Charles' former wife was "truly one of the greatest things that ever happened to me." Bryan, 64, had previously written a song titled Diana in 1984, with the track being released a year later.

It was widely believed that the song was about Diana and Charles, although it was never mentioned in the lyrics, but it suggested that Diana was well-known. It also implied the song was about the two royals as Diana was referred to as "the queen of all my dreams."

In a new interview, Bryan has spoken candidly about his friendship with Diana. The musician described their bond as "surreal" as they often had "good conversations."

Bryan revealed that when he was introduced to her on an aircraft, the late Princess sat down before he went on to explain that he'd used her name in a song. "Yes, I know, very funny, I'd like to hear it again," Diana is said to have told him. But that was just the beginning of their close friendship.

He went on to reveal to The Times that after sending a copy of the track to Kensington Palace, Diana's former home and office, he received a personal invitation for tea with her. Speaking to the outlet, he said: "When I first went round to KP, she wasn't like 'I really need to talk to somebody,' and you don't bulldoze into someone's life wanting to know everything in the first ten minutes.

"It was 'Let's have a cup of tea', but later, the more friendly we got, the more I learnt what was really going on." Discussing his song Diana, he said the Princess found it to be "laddish humour". But after almost four decades, he's finally revealed the inspiration behind the song.

He said: "Actually the song was inspired by that guy who (had) broken into the Queen's bedroom and sat on her bed smoking a fag." In 1982, Michael Fagan, a painter and decorator broke into Buckingham Palace and found himself in the late Queen Elizabeth's bedroom, who is said to have left immediately to find security. Although he was arrested, his actions were a civil wrongdoing and not a criminal offence, so he was never charged with trespassing in the Queen's bedroom.

Adams admits that he has since "retired" his song Diana following her devasting death in 1997.
