Petit on how Liverpool's 2020 title winners were better than Arsenal Invincibles

Emmanuel Petit may be an Arsenal icon, but he does not feel that the Gunners' legendary Invincibles squad are the best to grace the Premier League.

That title, according to the Frenchman, goes to the triumphant Liverpool side of the 2019/20 season. His stance may come as a surprise given his affection for the Gunners, but Petit feels that what was then Arsene Wenger's side going an entire campaign undefeated is no match for the Reds' title glory.

It is important to note that while Liverpool cruised to their first title in three decades, they did pick up three defeats along the way. Though Petit made clear he respects the most memorable achievement in his former club's history, they aren't quite on the level of Jurgen Klopp's men.

Speaking to Mirror Football back in 2020, Petit said: "I have huge respect for my old team-mates, but when I look at Liverpool, and what they have been doing for the past two years. "People are looking at them now because last year they won a European trophy, but really they have been like this for the past two or three years.

"It's amazing what they are doing - it is rare to see a team winning so many games and being so dominant against their opponents all the time. They were both great teams in history, but for me, this Liverpool team have something special.

"It is hard to explain what I feel when I look at Liverpool, but I don't remember thinking the same way when I was looking at the Invincibles. They have impressed me more than Arsenal's Invincibles.

"I am pretty sure Arsenal fans won't be happy with that. But I have to be honest. When I look at this team, the motivation, the intensity, so many talented players. Something is different with them."

Much like the Invincibles, Liverpool haven't been quite able to build on their title triumph and not win a league since, though they have had considerably less time and are up against an almighty force in Manchester City. Pep Guardiola's side have won five of the last six leagues on offer.

Petit will have his eye on this season's title race, with both Arsenal and Liverpool primed to threaten City's dominance. It is the Gunners who currently sit top, with their noses in front of the title rivals after a dramatic away win at Luton in midweek.
