NBA superstar LeBron James has called for the reform of gun laws in the US following a tragic shooting at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas campus.

Three people lost their lives in the attack on Dec. 6, with the suspect now dead, according to university official Adam Garcia. Another person was injured in the terrifying incident just a few miles from the Strip and is currently in hospital, while four others were taken to hospital due to panic attacks.

This mass shooting happened six years after the Las Vegas country music festival massacre, where 60 fans died and hundreds were injured. Speaking before the NBA game between his Los Angeles Lakers and the New Orleans Pelicans, James expressed his sadness at the news.

He offered his sympathies to the families of those killed and urged for a broader discussion about changing gun laws in the US. The Lakers icon shared: "Yeah, my brother from back home texted me and told me to be safe out here because he heard about the shooting at UNLV.

"First of all, my condolences go to the families that lost loved ones, families and friends and everything, James continued, before addressing the debate over gun laws, asserting: "It just goes back to what I said before about guns in America."

"I think it's such a longer conversation, but we keep dealing with the same story, this same conversation every single time it happens, and it just continues to happen," he stated, making a heartfelt appeal for a change in the current laws.

He added: "The ability to get a gun, the ability to do these things over and over and over, and there's been no change is literally ridiculous. It makes no sense that we continue to lose innocent lives, on campuses, schools, at shopping markets and movie theaters and all type of stuff."

James has been a strong advocate of the argument that gun laws should be reformed in the US, joining the likes of Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr in calling for change. James said: "It's ridiculous. The fact that we haven't changed anything -- it's actually been easier to be able to own a firearm. It's stupid."

The NBA also offered their condolences to the loved ones and friends of the victims of the mass shooting in Las Vegas. In a statement, they issued their support to the wider community in the Nevada city.

They expressed: "The NBA family is heartbroken by today's senseless shooting at UNLV. We extend our sincerest condolences to the families and friends of the victims, as well as the entire Las Vegas community."
