The BBC have confirmed the return of Waterloo Road for its third series following the release of its Christmas and New Year TV schedule.

On the back of the drama series' relaunch, fans are set to look forward to eight new episodes which will be available to view on the 2nd January 2024 from 8pm. And show favourites Angela Griffin, former Strictly Come Dancing star Adam Thomas and Kym Marsh will also reprise their roles. Series three will kick off with a group new students arriving at the Waterloo Road school and look set on causing trouble, upsetting the relatively peaceful environment.

Libby, played by Hattie Dynevor who is the real life daughter of Coronation Street's Sally Metcalfe, returns to stay with her dad Neil Guthrie who is the school's Head of History. But she soon proves that she is far from the perfect student.

Another new addition is Schuey, who starts off the school term with an explosive arrival and targets a particular teacher. Meanwhile, Headteacher Kim Campbell, played by Angela Griffin, finds herself once again in turmoil with Andrew Treneman, played by Jamie Glover, as her personal life starts to cross over into her professional life.

Cameron Roach, Executive Producer of Waterloo Road and Founder of Rope Ladder Fiction, said: "Waterloo Road arrives back on our screen in the New Year, with a screech of burning rubber, and we don’t let our foot off the gas. We’re incredibly proud of the energy and passion this show delivers on and offscreen, Waterloo Road not only delivers phenomenal numbers on BBC iPlayer, specifically for a young audience, but we really value the number of trainees that have now worked on, and graduated from the show, across all craft disciplines."

He added: "The writing and directing teams have also been buoyed by new talent to the show, including the brilliant Angela Griffin who directs episodes 5 and 6.We’re so grateful to all cast and crew for their continued commitment to this landmark BBC brand."

Back in May this year, fans were left delighted at the return of Andrew Treneman, who had taken 16 years off after taking a teaching job in Rwanda. Taking to Twitter, one fan said: "Actual shriek at the return of main man Andrew Treneman in #WaterlooRoad." Another person wrote: "Andrew three icon Treneman ayyyy!!!!!"

And a third wrote: "Andrew Treneman is back, my life is completed." And fan excitement over him rekindling his romance with Headteacher Kim reached fever pitch. One wrote: "No Kim, it’s never too late for you and Andrew Treneman!" “I hope Kim Campbell and Andrew Treneman get married. Long term storytelling #WaterlooRoad," another added.

Waterloo Road first aired in 2006 and has seen a number of well known faces pass through the school's doors including Jill Halfpenny, Neil Morrissey and Denise Welch. It also helped launch the career of Jenna Coleman, who went on to star in Doctor Who and ITV’s Emmy-nominated series Victoria.
