Strictly's Nigel Harman breaks cover after sad show exit and 'diva' claims
Nigel Harman has been seen for the first time since crashing out of Strictly Come Dancing as he broke his cover to receive treatment for an agonising injury that cos him his place in the competition.
The 50-year-old actor was a fan favourite during the 2023 season of Strictly – but his Glitterball dreams came to an abrupt end last weekend when he broke a rib during rehearsals, meaning he and dance partner Katya Jones, 34, had to withdraw from the contes immediately. Now Nigel has been snapped on his way to a physiotherapist as he is receiving treatment for his painful injury.
Photos show the former soap star looking winded as he walked through the streets of London in dark clothes while also sporting a bright orange cap, and clutching a copy of Seishi Yokomizo's novel, The Devil's Flute Murders–- a mystery set in post-war Tokyo. It is the first time Nigel has been seen in public since his Strictly exit – and also since reports emerged that crew working on the show were glad to see him drop out early as allegations have flown that he suffered from unpredictable mood swings behind-the-scenes of the series.
Nigel, who is seen in the photos obtained by the Daily Mail, appeared to address reports that he was moody backstage when he shared a video of himself on social media on Tuesday. The former EastEnders star – who presents himself as a meditation expert online – shared a video in which he preached about love and kindness.
Uploading the video to Instagram, Nigel told his fans: “Let’s do a little bit of loving kindness. So just taking a breath in, and breathing out. Breathing in some fresh, clean air, and breathing out. Just relaxing and letting go. And then whispering or receiving these phrases; May I be well. May I be happy. May I be peaceful. Mai I know deep and natural peace. May I be filled with loving and kindness. May I be free. Have a lovely day.”
EastEnders' Jake Wood's snap of son has fans pointing out the pair's likenessHe also shared a caption explaining his latest meditation tip, writing: “Join me for this short Metta Meditation focusing on loving kindness. December can be a really busy month full of activities and to do lists so remember to take some time out for your wellbeing. These phrases can help cultivate a loving kindness towards yourself and those around you.”
He added: “Don't worry if saying these phrases can feel unnatural at first, the more you practice the easier it becomes. As you gain confidence in this practice feel free to change the phrases to something that works for you.”
Reports on Monday suggested some Strictly crew were glad to see the back of Nigel after he crashed out of the show. The star is said to have taken his dance commitments very seriously, and would be left upset and inconsolable whenever he didn’t receive glowing feedback and high scores from the judges.
A source claimed to The Sun: "Nigel takes himself very seriously as a performer and throws himself heart and soul into things. So obviously he’s very emotional if things don’t go as he hoped. That often means that he can be like a bear with a sore head backstage. Viewers got a glimpse of that when he received disappointing scores for their quickstep in Blackpool."
But a Strictly source downplayed the drama and insisted those working on the show are looking forward to welcoming Nigel back for the final. They said: "It is always sad when a contestant leaves the show, particularly when an injury is sustained. Nigel will be well missed by those who have worked alongside him on the show and everyone wishes him the very best and looks forward to seeing him at the final on Saturday 16th December."
Meanwhile, Nigel himself explained the injury that cost him his place in the contest. Appearing on Strictly last weekend after news broke he had been forced to quit, the actor explained: “I was leaping off a rostrum and was about to be caught by some very handsome men and as I flew, I ‘Peter Panned’ as I landed and I was in A&E. So I’ve done something to my rib, basically and it’s quite painful. I’m a little bit high on painkillers as well, but I’m having a lovely time.”
