Brit granddad strangled with phone cord in Dubai hellhole prison

A British granddad jailed in Dubai on trumped up charges has narrowly escaped death after being strangled by another inmate with a telephone cord.

Londoner Albert Douglas, 61, was trying to contact his family back home from the Al Barsha prison when the convict attacked him from behind. Handlers passing on the call thought he was having a stroke and immediately handed him over to his son, Wolfgang Douglas.

Speaking of the traumatic incident, in which he had to listen to his father being assaulted, Wolfgang told The Sun: "They called me straight away and said they think he's having a stroke because he's gargling. He wasn't, he was being strangled to death. He is just a frail old man. He is totally and utterly finished now."

Thankfully, Albert defended himself and managed to fight the prisoner off but still had to be rushed to hospital. On his return, the cruel guards threw him into an isolation cell, where there was no light or fresh air. He developed Scabies during his stint in the punishment cell.

The family currently believe that the crazed inmate had become jealous of how regularly Albert speaks with his family on the phone. The son pays a staggering £130 for every 30 minutes he gets to spend on the phone with his father.

Many prisoners from Dubai and other parts of the world are unable to stump up the extortionate sum. Back in 2021, the British national revealed how he had been forced to witness fellow male prisoners being starved, tortured and even raped.

He has reportedly been beaten by prison guards, denied his heart medication and forced to suffer inhumane conditions, including drinking from a toilet. Mr Douglas was reportedly admitted to a Dubai hospital for surgery to repair a dislocated shoulder sustained in prison.

According to his son Wolfgang, he was allegedly being bullied into recording propaganda videos for local authorities in exchange for them funding medical treatment for injuries they inflicted. In a voice recording released to The Sun Online by the human rights organisation Detained in Dubai, Mr Douglas said he had witnessed a cellmate attempt suicide.

He added: “I've seen a gay man raped and seen the systematic abuse of African and Asian people based purely and simply because of the colour of their skin." Guards at the prison are also alleged to have burnt off a prisoner’s private parts and young men were reportedly hung upside down and beaten for “sport”.

The Brit also claimed he had been given the duty to care for the British-Australian great-grandfather, William Meyerhoff, 72, with whom he shared a “filthy” cell.
