Christmas is now a mere few weeks away - and with the start of December officially marking the beginning of the countdown to the big day, it also means the start of some festive traditions.

Up and down the country, many children will be eagerly anticipating the annual arrival of Santa’s cheekiest little helper: the one and only The Elf on the Shelf.

After all, Santa has given a special job only to The Elf on the Shelf, to watch over their chosen family at Christmas time and bring the magic of belief, faith, and hope to children - and to those young at heart, of course.

Many festive creatures appear at this time of year, and it can be difficult to discern the ones officially employed by Santa in the all-important role of Scout Elf helper.

Luckily, there are several signs to help you know whether you're picking an official The Elf on the Shelf Scout Elf helper - here are just a few ways you'll be able to tell.

They've dressed to impress - and they've got the accessories to match

Only real Scout Elf helpers wear their official North Pole - and Santa-approved uniform - of a solid red jumpsuit with a pointy white collar. It might surprise you that they don't have stripy leggings or pointy ears, but they like to keep things simple. Besides, ask Santa himself - according to him, everyone looks good in red.

They also arrive with their very own storybook - 'The Elf on the Shelf: A Christmas Tradition' - so that their new family can learn all about their mission.

You'll get official adoption papers too, so you can help give your new family member a name, which activates their Christmas magic.

They spread kindness, not mischief

Another way to recognise an official The Elf on the Shelf Scout Elf helper is that they're not naughty or malicious. Don't get it wrong, they're still magical elves and therefore love humor and silliness, to create fun moments with their adopted families, but the key difference is they do not behave badly.

Instead, The Elf on the Shelf Scout Elf helpers represent goodness during the festive season, and they aim to inspire children to be their best selves, spreading joy, kindness, and the true spirit of Christmas.

Co-founder and Co-CEO of The Lumistella Company, Chanda Bell said: "Sometimes silly and sometimes messy, The Elf on the Shelf Scout Elf friends are never naughty.

"These are the original Christmas elves - the ones trusted not only by Santa but also by kids and parents worldwide - to bring joyful family moments along with family-friendly stories and characters.

"We know families want to invest in genuine, official products, and quality entertainment and experiences. This is why it’s so important to know the differences between the one and only The Elf on the Shelf and all the other kinds of elves out there."

They're only available from specific, Santa-approved centres
