Katya Jones has her own Strictly 'curse' as she clocks up sad show record
Strictly Come Dancing might be well known for its infamous ‘curse’ – but it seems like professional dancer Katya Jones might be carrying a curse of her very own.
The 34-year-old Russian dancer was partnered with 50-year-old soap icon Nigel Harman for the 2023 season of the long-running BBC dance show – but they were forced to drop out of the competition early last week after Nigel sustained a crippling injury. The former EastEnders actor broke a rib during rehearsals meaning he was no longer fit enough to carry on with the contest – leaving Katya and Nigel in tears.
Explaining the moment he injured himself during Saturday’s live show, Nigel said: “I was leaping off a rostrum and was about to be caught by some very handsome men and as I flew, I ‘Peter Panned’ as I landed and I was in A&E. So I’ve done something to my rib, basically and it’s quite painful. I’m a little bit high on painkillers as well, but I’m having a lovely time.”
But, of course, Nigel being forced to quit the show means that Katya too had to quit the series – forcing her out of the Glitterball race once again. And it appears a pattern is forming for Katya, as this series isn't the first she has come crashing out of early.

The pair were expected to dance for survival after landing in the bottom – but injury stole their chance and the duo were forced to withdraw without doing the dance off.

And back in 2020, the star made Strictly history when she was partnered with 41-year-old boxing champ Nicola Adams – becoming the first ever same-sex couple to compete on the show. But, disaster struck during the third week of the contest as a positive Covid-19 test result meant they were forced to leave the contest.
Katya’s 2023 exit hit extra hard as it was her best run in the contest for six years as her past partners have either forced her out of the show with their medical issues – or led to her being voted off by the judges due to poor performances. It was back in 2017 that Katya last made it all the way to the final – which she won alongside TV actor Joe McFadden, 48.

It has been six years since Katya won with Strictly with Joe McFadden (PA)The original Strictly curse – which involves celebrities growing too close to their dance partner and wrecking their private lives behind-the-scenes of the show – has also impacted Katya. Back in 2018, she was partnered with 37-year-old comedian Seann Walsh and the pair caused scandal when they were spied passionately kissing on the streets of London.
Seann was in a relationship with actress Rebecca Humphries at the time – and their romance subsequently imploded. And while Katya was married to fellow Strictly pro Neil Jones at the time, they vowed to stay together and soldier on with their relationship. However, mere months later, the couple announced they were separating, although the pair insisted Katya and Shaun's kiss didn't play a part in their split.
