Children badly injured as Israel continued its bombardment of Gaza have turned a hospital into a “death zone”, according to a spokesman for Unicef.

As Israel concentrated heavy air strikes on the south of the Gaza Strip and the cities of Khan Younis and Rafah, the government media office in Gaza claimed 700 Palestinians had been killed in the past 24 hours.

James Elder, spokesman for Unicef, the United Nations Children’s Fund, described conditions inside al-Nassar hospital in Khan Younis.

He said: “Everywhere you turn to, there are children with third-degree burns, shrapnel wounds, brain injuries and broken bones.

“Mothers crying over children who look as if they are hours away from death. It seems like a death zone now.”

Israel said Hamas fighters are hiding in the south. Mark Regev, an adviser to the Israeli prime minister, said there was “major Hamas military infrastructure” in Khan Younis.

The Israel Defence Forces said yesterday that troops have discovered more than 800 tunnel shafts in Gaza since the ground offensive began. They said around 500 of them have already been destroyed, either by setting off large explosive charges inside or by sealing them.

After visiting the region, the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court said that his office would intensify its investigations. The court has been investigating crimes committed by both sides. Israel is not a member state and does not recognise its jurisdiction.

Prosecutor Karim Khan said: “The attacks against innocent Israeli civilians on October 7 represent some of the most serious international crimes that shock the conscience of humanity.”

He said his team are working “to hold those responsible to account”. Meanwhile, a British-owned cargo ship has been hit by rocket fire as it passed through the Red Sea. Further details on the attack were not available last night.
