Two dogs have been shot dead by armed cops after a vicious rampage this morning when they broke loose and left a dog walker in hospital.

The man was left injured after bull breed dogs escaped from a property in Sheffield, south Yorkshire, and attacked his dog in the area of Darnall. Police were called to Handsworth Road in the city shortly just before 9am today where they were met by the three aggressive dogs on the rampage.

It’s thought that two animals, suspected to be bull breeds, escaped from a nearby property and launched an attack on a dog being walked along the street. The attack caused injuries that required veterinary attention while the owner was taken to hospital for urgent treatment, police said.

A man has been arrested after a dog attack on the street which led to police destroying two dogs. A third dog was was contained by officers and has been seized. Armed cops sealed the road off and shot two of the dogs before they could attack anyone else, before seizing the third dog. A 27-year-old man was held on suspicion of having a dog dangerously out of control and remains in custody, the force said.

A police spokesman said: “An investigation is ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the dog being dangerously out of control. Anyone with information is asked to call 101." The road has been partially closed while investigations take place, South Yorkshire Police said.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesperson added: "As officers were searching the area, a further report was received that two dogs, believed to be of a bull breed had escaped from a property attacked a dog being walked along the street, causing injuries that required veterinary treatment.

"The dog’s owner also suffered injuries during the attack and required hospital treatment. Officers were sent to Handsworth Road in an attempt to find and capture the dogs. It is understood the dogs became increasingly aggressive towards officers, posing a significant risk to the public.

"Firearms officers destroyed the dogs to prevent further any further injuries or risk. A 27-year-old man from Sheffield has been arrested on suspicion of having a dog dangerously out of control. He remains in police custody."
