Billie Eilish didn't realize when she did an interview for Variety she would be publicly coming out.

She admitted she didn't quite mean to come out, but wasn't hiding it either. In her Variety cover story, Billie said: "I’ve never really felt like I could relate to girls very well. I love them so much. I love them as people. I’m attracted to them as people. I’m attracted to them for real."

The 21-year-old singer was asked about what she meant while at the Variety Hitmakers event on Saturday. "We gotta talk about your cover story because you mention that you felt like for a long time women didn't like you," the interviewer asked Billie.

She answered shyly: "I'm still scared of them but I think they're pretty." The interviewer then asked the big question everyone was wondering. "Billie, did you mean to come out in this story?" She asked.

Billie couldn't stop laughing. "Girl, no I didn't but I kind of thought, 'Wasn't it obvious?' Like its kinda been... I just didn't realize people didn't know," the singer explained.

The interviewer, who self-identified as a member of the LGBTQ+ community in the interview, shared her viewpoint on whether people should publicly come out. "We need to get to a point where you don't even have to come out," she said.

The Bad Guy singer agreed. "I just don't really believe in it. It's like why can't we just exist?" she said, "I've been doing this for a long time and I just didn't talk about it, whoops."

She then admitted she was just as caught off guard when she read the cover story once it was published. "I saw the articles and I was like, 'Oh I guess I came out today!' I was like, okay cool," she said.

"It's exciting to me because, you know, I guess people didn't know. So it's cool that they know but I'm nervous talking about it," Billie added and nervously laughed.

"I am for the girls," Billie said before the interview ended. The Grammy winner had faced backlash in the past with people online accusing her of queerbaiting.

Fans pointed out that those who once accused her are "real quiet now," according to one Twitter user. Other social media users are happy for Billie and accept her as she is. "I think we all knew but we just wanted to respect her time and privacy," one Tweet read.
