The Voice UK fans issue plea to will.i.am and Olly Murs after Cheryl reference

The Voice UK fans were treated to an impromptu performance from Olly Murs and will.i.am on Saturday night as they broke into a duet together which included a reference to fellow singer Cheryl.

The ITV talent show has drawn attention from some fans this year as each episode has featured the judges - which consist of Olly, 39, Will, 48, singer Anne Marie, 32, and music legend Sir Tom Jones, 83 - breaking into song. On Saturday night, Olly asked the live studio audience “Where are the troublemakers at?” This served as an easy excuse for him to pick up a microphone and start singing his 2012 song, Troublemaker.

What surprised audiences, however, was when American superstar Will hopped out of his own revolving chair to join in. With a microphone in his own hand, he started singing along to Olly’s tune. But then he stole the show when he diverged and started singing his own 2007 hit song Heartbreaker - which features the vocal talents of Girls Aloud star Cheryl Tweedy on the original version of the track.

The duo set off the live studio audience - and also thrilled members of the public who were watching the show at home. Many took to social media to demand that a full version of the song be made available - or for Will to re-record his track with Olly’s vocals, rather than Cheryl’s.

One fan gushed online: "Ok I quite enjoyed that impromptu Troublemaker / Heartbreaker hybrid on #TheVoiceUK." And another requested a full version of the mash-up get released, writing: That @iamwill and @ollymurs mash-up on @thevoiceuk is a track I think we can all agree we need a longer version of #TheVoiceUK."

Another wrote that they prefer the will.i.am song without Chezza’s floating vocals, writing: "Call me old but I’ve always preferred will.i.am’s heartbreaker without Cheryl #thatsjustme."

Will and Cheryl’s version of the song hit number 4 in the UK and has since gone on to be certified Silver - meaning the song has sold over 200,000 copies. Cheryl is back on the music scene herself - having rejoined Nadine Coyle, Kimberley Walsh and Nicola Roberts to reform the iconic band, Girls Aloud.

The group were put together via an ITV talent show called Popstars: The Rivals back in 2002 along with original member Sarah Harding. Tragically, Sarah died in 2021 following a brave battle against cancer.

The members of the band are hitting the road in 2024 with The Girls Aloud Show arena tour which will celebrate the group's existence for more than 20 years and also be a tribute to Sarah. The ladies sought the approval of Sarah’s mum Marie Hardman before agreeing to go on tour - and also received her blessing for Sarah’s vocals to be included in the show so fans would be able to hear her as part of the performances.

The girls also confirmed they would not be recording or releasing any new tracks for the new tour. Cheryl told Vogue: “We couldn’t because Sarah wouldn’t be included in that newness. This is about celebrating the 20 years we’ve all had. So the tour has got to be inclusive of Sarah because she’s such a massive part of our make-up. It will never feel like the old Girls Aloud again but we’ve reached a point where we feel ready to celebrate all of it. Sarah included.”
