If you're wondering why your drains keep repeatedly getting blocked, then a savvy pipe expert may well have the answer.

In the run-up to the festive period, the last thing any of us need is a big expense, and as anyone who has ever had a blocked drain will undoubtedly know, getting a plumber out to take a look could cost a far heap of money. Indeed, the cost of fixing a blocked drain is estimated to be approximately £240 per project, a sum you'll likely far rather spend on presents for loved ones.

Luckily, there are things you can do to prevent and fix blocked drains, allowing for a little less financial stress at the priciest time of the year.

Russell Brazier, pipe expert and owner of Transam Extrusions, has now detailed how to avoid blocked drains, offering both preventive methods and ways to fix them.

Preventive Measures

Russell recommends being extra careful about what goes down your drains, advising: "Avoid pouring grease, oils, coffee grounds, and food scraps down the kitchen sink. Similarly, in the bathroom, prevent hair, dental floss, and toiletry products from entering drains." According to Russell, establishing routine maintenance is key when it comes to keeping debris from getting into your pipes.

Strainers and drain guards could do the trick in this instance, while regular cleaning should help to avoid accumulation. Flushing hot water down the drain should help to disperse grease and other sources of build-up, while natural cleaners can work like a charm. Russell suggests: "Make use of organic remedies like vinegar and baking soda. To keep drains clean and small clogs free, pour baking soda, vinegar, and hot water down the drain."

Fixing blocked drains

When it comes to fixing blocked drains, Russell suggests: "Boiling water may work wonders for small blockages. It can dissolve small clogs or soap scum when poured down the drain. To remove obstructions, use a plunger made especially for sinks. Make a tight seal and dive hard to get past the obstacle.

"Chemical cleaners should be used with caution since they might harm pipes. Always pay close attention to the directions and use them cautiously. Baking soda and vinegar can serve as a natural solution for mild blockages. Pour baking soda, followed by vinegar, down the drain and flush with hot water after 15-20 minutes.

"When dealing with more difficult obstructions, the debris causing the obstruction can be manually removed using an auger or plumbing snake."

Of course, there may be times when you'll need to consult a professional. Russell continued: "Call a licenced plumber if you're not sure how to handle the problem or if all else fails. With their knowledge and equipment, they can remove stubborn obstructions without doing further harm."
