Seaside towns have always been popular with Brits, but there are some that even the royals and prime ministers deem worthy of a visit.

Frinton-on-Sea in Essex - which is about a two-hour drive or two-hour train journey from London - is a quiet spot, that is a British classic. Colourful beach huts fringe the coast, and it's beach has recently been awarded Blue Flag status, marking its spot among the best in the country.

In the late 1920s and the 1930s, Frinton-on-Sea welcomed royal visitors like Prince Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson, with the lovers staying on Holland Road, just a spitting distance from the Esplanade. Wartime Prime Minister, Winston Churchill, also went on holiday in Frinton as well as Hollywood silent movie actor Douglas Fairbanks.

The Blue Flag beach has received positive reviews on TripAdvisor, achieving a 4.5 out of 5 star rating. One person wrote: "What a lovely, clean beach, with soft, soft, sand and amenities nearby - plus, free parking!" Another said: "One of the best beaches in the South East."

Visit Essex says: "With a reputation as an exclusive resort, Frinton retains an atmosphere of the 1920/30's. Tree-lined avenues sweep down to the elegant Esplanade and cliff-top greensward, with its colourful Victorian-style beach huts. The sandy beach is quiet and secluded.

"The sea front is still lined by many Victorian style beach huts, which is reminiscent of the days when Frinton-on-Sea was the favourite retreat for the aristocracy and even Royalty. With Frinton only being 15 miles from Colchester and close to Harwich, it’s the perfect place for beachgoers and visitors to relax and be away from the crowds.

"Spending time on the Essex coast and hiring a beach hut in Frinton on Sea will bring back cherished childhood memories of holidays spent by the seaside. Children still love to spend time on a British beach, whatever the weather. Frinton on Sea, with its wide sandy beach, has remained as un-commercialised as possible and maintained its reputation as a quiet family resort. It boasts an air of reserved gentility and has been rewarded for its outstanding cleanliness with a Blue Flag award.

"The beach at Frinton is one of the most popular in Essex. It has a shelving profile which is divided up by a series of timber groynes and the sand at Frinton is perfect for making sandcastles - nice and firm. This also makes it ideal for running around on and beach games, further boosting its credentials as a fine family beach.

"Come and visit this beautiful seaside town in the Tendring District – we can guarantee you won’t be disappointed."
