It was a derby day to forget for Hamburg goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes, whose own-goal howler has been labelled one of the worst of all-time.

Hamburg made the journey to face bitter rivals St Pauli on Friday for a top-of-the-table clash in 2.Bundesliga. Extremely confident on the ball, Fernandes has been one of the German giants' standout performers this season and a win could've been enough for them to leapfrog St Pauli, who took an early 1-0 lead.

As Hamburg attempted to play out from the back in typically bold fashion, a rogue pass from defender Guilherme Ramos sent the ball bobbling towards goal. Although it looked to be heading narrowly wide, Fernandes felt that he had to react and took a huge swing for the ball - only to slice it into his own net.

The home crowd could barely believe it and erupted into a celebration, as St Pauli went 2-0 up and looked to be extending their lead at the top of the table to six points. Fernandes was in disbelief, too, as the Portuguese goalkeeper wandered around his net while his team-mates were stood dejected.

Social media quickly became awash with reaction, with one user writing: "I know global football generally throws up a mad own goal at least once a week but I think this might be the s***est of all-time. A real team effort."

Another echoed his sentiment, putting more blame on the shoulders of centre-back Ramos. "The defender played an atrocious pass back," they explained. "Ball hits a bobble just before he boots it. More blame on the defender than the keeper for this."

A second followed-up by saying: "Horrible pass from the defender... Goalkeeper was getting closed down and had to clear it one time then the ball clearly bounced before he kicked it."

But the error didn't totally cost Hamburg, as second-half goals from former Cardiff striker Robert Glatzel and ex- Borussia Dortmund winger Immanuel Pherai brought it back to 2-2. Fernandes also made five saves in the match, keeping St Pauli at bay and helping the visitors secure a point.

At full-time, Hamburg's fans didn't hurl abuse at the 31-year-old but instead chanted his name. Fernandes will hope to put things right when his side face Hertha Berlin in the DFB Pokal on Wednesday before returning to second-tier action at home to Paderborn next Saturday.
