Fans consider theories about why Taylor waited to address marriage rumours
It was a busy day for Taylor Swift's team on Thursday when marriage rumours were debunked in a series of signals.
Taylor dated Joe Alwyn in a longterm committed relationship, but it was largely out of the public eye. Earlier in 2023, they reportedly split which rattled fans everywhere. The pop star never directly explained what happened or discuss a timeline for their end, but fans speculate that songs on her Midnights album tell part of the story.
For Swifties, the timeline never quite made sense as the album was jam packed with break up songs, but the pair were seen together the night it was announced. Taylor claimed, at the time, that the songs were from aspects of her life in the past, but many clues pointed to much more recent relationship issues. However, with such a long relationship also came speculation that at some point they were married. As the rumours swelled, a gossip page called Deuxmoi started to feed them.

The rumours have been budding for a long time, but Thursday's events brought everything to a staggering halt. Taylor released You're Losing Me onto streaming services after being unavailable to fans without a CD for months. Jack Antonoff, her cowriter, made a celebratory post on Instagram stories that said she wrote the song in 2021 - two years before the public split.
'I'm spending £20k on a new bathroom - but won't help my brother out with cash'This totally blew apart the previous Taylor and Joe timeline, suggesting their relationship may have made a huge shift at that time. Plus, it debunked the idea that they were getting married because the lyrics are: "I wouldn't marry me, either. A pathological people pleaser who only wanted you to see her."
When Tree Paine, Taylor's publicist, made a very public post and statement, the theory was shut down altogether. In response to Deuxmoi claiming admentaly that Taylor had a secret ceremony, Tree wrote: "Enough is enough with these fabricated lies about Taylor from Deuxmoi. There was NEVER a marriage or ceremony of ANY kind."
Tree went on to slam the slight for the affect it was having on the singer. The only question left was: Why did it take so long to shut down these rumours when they've been going on for years. One fan speculated that Taylor went through some trauma and was only just now ready to tell her story: "The Deuxmoi post after the one Tree screenshotted was about Taylor having a miscarriage and that being why they didn’t get married. It’s sick and explains why she said 'the pain and trauma' these posts cause."
Another fan pointed fingers at the miscarriage post, too, and tweeted a screenshot. They wrote: "I genuinely think the final straw was this post actually, but Tree and co simply didn't want to draw attention to it directly."
Other fans believe that something recently happened behind-the-scenes that caused the sparks to fly from Taylor's camp. A fan wrote: "Tree rarely speaks out so I just know Taylor is really fucking pissed. As she should be. That gossip girl reject has been claiming she's married for years now."
"I wanna know what Joe did recently for all of Taylor’s friends to like negative stuff abt him, for her to drop ylm," another fan speculated. "Tree to say they never got married or anything close, for all of them to be so angry like DAMNNNN THEY ALL FIRED UP."
With Taylor's romance with Travis now public, fans believe that could be a part of the story, too. Since Joe and Taylor were so lowkey, the A-list nature of Taylor and Travis certainly seems like a huge jump. So, fans think that she wanted to finally set the record straight to avoid any confusion now that she has a new man on her arm.
