Newcastle United have been dumped out of the FA Cup at the Third round after a shock 2-1 defeat by League One outfit Sheffield Wednesday.

Eddie Howe's men made the trip to Hillsborough in fanastic form, having not lost a game in any competition since their Premier League defeat by Liverpool all the way back in August. However, a brace from Josh Windass ensured that remarkable run came to an end.

The hosts took the lead on the 52nd minute, though Darren Moore's men can be thankful there was no VAR presence on Saturday night as Windass looked marginally offside before he delicately guided his effort beyond Martin Dubravka.

There were no debates over his and Wednesday's second however, with Windass firing home a lethal right-footed effort that left the Magpies shot-stopper with no chance.

Bruno Guimaraes bundled an effort home from close range to set up a very nervy finish, but Newcastle failed to make their large periods of dominance count for anything and as a result taste defeat for just the second time this season.

Chris Wood spurned a glorious chance to level things up and force the tie into a replay, as the New Zealand international fired over in spectacular fashion after being played through by Joelinton.

The result means Newcastle have now been dumped out of the FA Cup at the third round stage for the third season in a row, the last two of which have come during Howe's reign.

For all of Newcastle's stellar showings in the league this term, the St. James' Park would have surely loved a cup run and the chance to lift the FA Cup for the seventh time in their history and the first time in 68 years.

English football legend Chris Waddle made more than a century of appearances for both of these sides during his career and explained how the hosts were well worth their win.

"Give Sheffield Wednesday massive praise they had a go at Newcastle, they didn't sit back, they were forced back in the last 15 minutes," Waddle claimed.

"Newcastle will kick themselves, they had glorious chances and could have put the game to bed but Wednesday stuck at it, rolled their sleeves up and they deserved it."

It is not all doom and gloom for the Magpies on the silverware front, as Newcastle still have a date with Leicester City in the Carabao Cup quarter final to look forward to on Tuesday as they aim to reach the last four.
