A photograph of Huw Edwards is no longer on display at the BBC in a sign the newsreader’s future there could be over.

Images of the broadcaster’s biggest stars are regularly rotated in the atrium above the newsroom, but Huw’s picture has not been seen for five months.

It has sparked speculation among staff that BBC bosses see no future for the star. One staffer said: “For a long time Huw’s was one of the main images. We are not expecting to see it back.”

Huw, 62, was suspended in July after he was accused of paying a young person for explicit images.

He was also accused of sharing “inappropriate messages” with BBC staff. Police said there was no evidence of criminality.

A BBC source said the newsreader’s image had been taken down before his suspension and was unrelated to recent events. The source added pictures of Laura Kuenssberg and Clive Myrie had also been removed during the same period.

But the staffer added: “You would have expected the picture to be rotated back again now, and it’s telling it hasn’t been.” Insiders at the BBC have claimed there is “no way back” for Edwards amid reports he is in exit negotiations with the broadcaster.

But officials have downplayed the claims. A BBC spokesman said: “We urge people not to speculate. We will not provide a commentary on how things might stand.”
