Owen Warner believes that controversial figures on I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! is the "new norm" for the ITV programme.

The Hollyoaks actor who appeared on the show in 2022, eventually finishing in second place found himself sitting alongside disgraced former Health Secretary Matt Hancock during his stint in the Australian jungle. Mr Hancock appeared on the show months after he was forced to quit his top government job after it emerged he'd breached his own coronavirus lockdown rules.

Upon entering the jungle, Hancock, 45, was grilled by his fellow campmates who were enraged that he'd broken the law – although he defended his actions and claimed he only breached guidance, not laws, while engaging in an affair. But former MEP Nigel Farage who has been accused of racism, sexism and xenophobia over the course of his career is currently appearing on the show with many viewers threatening a boycott.

Speaking exclusively to the Mirror at Hits Live Manchester about controversial figures appearing on the show, he said: "I think that's the norm now, get a politician thrown in there. There's a lot of big names and big personalities. I wouldn't trade my name but they've got some good people in there."

Discussing his year, Owen said: "So many Kings and Queen's knocking about and then there's me, just chilling." Owen was camping alongside Lioness legend Jill Scott, Coronation Street royalty Sue Cleaver and actual royalty, Mike Tindall, who is married to the King's niece, Zara.

But while Mike previously had dinner with the late Queen Elizabeth, Owen joked: "I had dinner with the Queen, I was sat there with Jill Scott, it was mad, I had proper imposter syndrome." Currently, Owen is sitting in for Sam Thompson on Hits Radio, while the former Made In Chelsea star competes on the show.

Offering his advice, Owen said: "I would say to Sam, sit there and go 'Wow, this is incredible to be in', not going in there thinking to win over the people, just be an empty sponge and absorb it." Throwing his support behind Sam, Owen revealed that he and his new colleagues gather to watch him on the ITV programme and believe that he's gone in with the "right attitude" and has shown that he's "buzzing" to be in the jungle.

But Owen was left stunned when the Mirror informed him that ITV sources confirmed that they water down the gruesome drinks during the eating and drinking challenges to make them more palatable.

The actor commented: "The b****ck I ate, that was real, that was a chewy ball – with the testicles, they're massive but because you're so hungry, it's nice, not the ball specifically but the rest of it, it's nice to eat something." Although some may recognise Owen as an actor, reflecting on his new career as a radio presenter, he said: "They said 'Yeah, you're going to be covering for a month', I was properly thrown in at the deep end.

"I feel like the deep end is the best way to learn. I've absolutely loved it, I've learnt on the job, and it's such a mad feeling going out live. It's so different but also quite similar, I'm reading, and I've got to be energetic. I've got to be careful, I get too excited."
