Nicola Roberts has poked fun at her Girls Aloud co-star Cheryl Tweedy by reminding her of a controversial comment she made about the bands’ music.

Earlier this month, Girls Aloud fans were thrown into a spin when the iconic band announced they would be reforming and hitting the road for the first time in 11 years to perform their music in memory of late band member Sarah Harding. And in the days since the announcement, fans have been flooding social media to express their excitement for the upcoming 2024 tour.

Each of the surviving members - including Nicola, Cheryl, Nadine Coyle and Kimberley Walsh - have been sharing updates and posts about the tour themselves. And 38-year-old Nicola has been sharing photos, videos and announcements on her personal social media feeds.

On Monday, the singer shared a photo of herself, Nicola, Kimberley and Cheryl standing outside a BBC building and she wrote a message to her fans. The singer typed: “I wanted to say thank you so much for the love and excitement we have felt since our announcement. It really has made us all feel so welcomed back.”

Her post on Instagram provoked a further flurry of excitement and appreciation from her fans - with one in particular writing in response: “I did not expect to be back in my fangirl life at 31 years old… but I’m SO here for it.”

Nicola then replied directly to this message to state: “I don’t think Chez expected to be singing love machine past 30 but she’s so here for it.” Her quip hugely amused fans who ‘liked’ the reply, and the original comment responded: “and so she should be here for it!” along with a crying-with-laughter emoji.

Nicola’s sassy comment is a reference to an infamous comment Cheryl made about singing Girls Aloud songs in the past. The star - who has struggled to maintain a music career of her own outside of the group - said back in 2006 as part of a Girls Aloud documentary: “There’ll be no reunions, though. Could you imagine? 30-odd-year-old… ‘I’m just a love machine’? Nah. No thanks.”

Girls Aloud formed in 2002 on the ITV reality show Popstars: The Rivals. The group also included original member Sarah - who tragically died in 2021 at the age of 39 and following a brave battle against cancer. The 2024 Girls Aloud Show UK tour is being held to mark 21 years since the band first hit the charts - and in honour of Sarah.

Over the weekend it was announced that the band sought the approval of Sarah’s heartbroken mother, Marie Hardman, before agreeing to take to the road again. And it has been reported that proceeds from the tour will be split five ways, with Sarah’s estate receiving a fifth of the money, and that the late singer’s vocals will be incorporated into the tour so fans will feel her presence.

A source told the Mail on Sunday: “The girls wanted to include Marie from start to finish. They wanted her to feel part of all of this and not do anything at all that might not be right for her. Marie, of course, was absolutely thrilled that there would be a tour, but also that Sarah will be very much included in it to the extent that nobody thought would be imaginable. It was important to the girls that they ran through everything with Marie.”
