Shocking footage has shown the moment an enormous crane collapsed on top of an apartment building in Edinburgh this morning as locals heard the ground "shake".

Emergency services rushed to a construction site in Stead's Place in Leith after the huge crane landed on a row of flats that had been errected in the area. Medics rushed one person to hospital following the incident.

Pictures and clips have emerged on Twitter which seem to show the long arm of the yellow crane placed on the building after it fell on top at around 9.30am. Locals said they were preparing for work when they heard a loud "smash". Michael Lakomy, 33, explained how he was getting ready for his brewery job when he felt the "vibration".

He said: "I was in my living room getting ready to leave for the day. I heard a very elongated sound, like a lorry offloading heavy material. But it just kept going and kept going. I could tell something was not right, and then I heard the smash. The ground was shaking and I felt the vibration. All the workers were running around about checking if everyone was okay. The atmosphere afterwards was quite serious but not frantic. I didn't see any stretchers - it was precautionary, like they were clearing the scene. [When I left for work] the crane was still resting on the roof. The crane looked bent from the pressure of something."

Another resident wrote on Twitter: "All I can hear is siren after siren wizzing along the road behind the house racing to the scene. Hope there's no injuries on this one." Authorities have confirmed a section of the area, Leith Walk, and Pirlrig Street have been closed as they respond to the incident. Motorists and pedestrians have been urged to avoid the area. A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service vehicle is visible in a video shared online and around a dozen workers in high-vis jackets and hard hats can be seen looking onto the scene from a safe distance. The incident is said to have taken place at Drum Property Group’s 2.9-acre development site.

The metal arm of the crane looks to be mangled in images shared by Dave Armstrong, who is a director at Edinburgh City FC, with elements of the equipment also visibly snapped. Another image shows the collapsed arm on top of the flats that are under construction in the Leith area. A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were in attendence.

A scotland>Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Emergencies services are in attendance at Stead's Place in Edinburgh after a crane collapsed at a building site. There are road closures in place at Leith Walk and Pilrig Street. Motorists and pedestrians are asked to avoid the area." The Scottish Ambulance Service told MailOnline: 'We received a call at 0929 hours today to attend an incident in Leith, Edinburgh. We dispatched two ambulances and our special operations team (SORT) to the scene and transported one patient to New Edinburgh Royal Infirmary."
