Eight in ten Brits (82%) say the most special thing about Christmas – is getting to spend time with family, research has found.

Other magical moments during the festive season include putting up Christmas lights and decorations, and seeing loved ones open their gifts.

Watching Christmas films together, and listening to Christmas songs, also ranked highly in the top 20 list – while for others, it's all about that first mince pie of the season, or sharing a box of chocolates.

Meanwhile, adults look forward to a few well-earned days of rest off work, as well as seeing their children's faces when they unwrap their presents.

The research, of 2,000 adults who celebrate the holiday season, was commissioned by Very, and found that 77% believe that Christmas is, and should be, a magical time of year, with 63% making a special effort in 2023.

Jessica Myers, spokeswoman for online retailer, Very, said: "As the festive season approaches, it's clear to see that there are specific moments that make Christmas magical for families across the UK.

"From celebrating and embracing traditions, to spending time with loved ones and picking out the perfect gift, there is plenty to get excited about."

The study, carried out through OnePoll, also found that parents believe children find Christmas the "most special" at six years old.

And when it comes to buying gifts, adults spend an average of four hours researching the perfect presents each year – with one in 10 preferring to get everything from one place, as long as there’s enough variety.

Jessica Myers, for Very, added: "The intangible moments that create lasting memories ensure that the true spirit of the festive period continues to thrive in our hearts and homes.

"With just 29 days left until the big day, we’re excited to add a little bit of magic and sparkle to homes this Christmas, and a variety of options to suit all budgets in one place."
