The director of the first Twilight movie thinks she has the perfect casting in mind for a possible Twilight remake.

Catherine Hardwicke directed the original 2008 film based on the novel by Stephanie Meyer. In honour of the movie's fifteenth anniversary, she watched the film with Josh Horowitz on his Happy Sad Confused podcast.

The original film starred Robert Pattinson as vampire Edward Cullen who falls in love with mortal Bella Swan, played by Kristen Stewart. But with the rise of reboots, Josh shared his own thoughts of who should play the couple for a new generation, and Catherine agreed.

Josh recommended Jacob Elordi and Jenna Ortega to play the leading roles. "Oh yeah, that would be perfect," Catherine agreed.

She was quick to praise Jacob, who was known for his role as Nate Jacobs on Euphoria and Elvis Presley in Sofia Coppola's latest film, Priscilla. "I mean, he's amazing. He probably would be Edward today, exactly," Catherine said about the 26-year-old Australian.

To play leading lady Bella, Josh asked the director who she thought would fit the role. "I mean, of course, you just mentioned Jenna Ortega," Catherine said, adding she was "amazing."

Jenna played Wednesday Addams in the hit Netflix series Wednesday and was slated to star in Scream 7 but had to pull out due to scheduling conflicts. Her departure from the film came days after co-star Melissa Barrera was fired for "anti-Semitic" posts supporting Palestine in the current conflict in the Middle East.

On Josh's podcast, Catherine spoke about Lionsgate Studios possibly making a Twilight TV series. She said she wasn't sure what the show was going to consist of.

Catherine did say she hoped the franchise went in a different direction. "For me, it would be fun to do Twilight in outer space. I would be ecstatic to do that, something totally different," she said.

The original series spanned five movies, with the last book being turned into two films. Twilight, the first film in the series, made $408.4 million (about £323.3 million).

It launched the career of Kristen Stewart, who went on to star as Princess Diana in the film Spencer and Snow White in Snow White and the Huntsman. Robert Pattinson was also brought into the mainstream after his last big role was Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. He recently starred as the latest Batman opposite Zoe Kravitz as Catwoman.
