Strictly result sees ninth couple axed after unexpected dance-off news

Strictly Come Dancing aired another elimination on Sunday night, with the judges divided on who to send home on the BBC series.

But not everyone had expected one of the couples to be in the bottom two, while viewers had guessed it was game over for one pairing. Angela Scanlon became the ninth contestant to be eliminated from the show with her pro dance partner Carlos Gu.

The TV presenter, who had impressed the judges and viewers across the later part of the series, found herself in the dreaded dance-off against show favourites Layton Williams and Nikita Kuzmin. Both couples performed their routines again, with Layton and Nikita performing their American Smooth to ‘It’s Oh So Quiet’ by Björk.

Angela and her dance partner Carlos performed their Cha Cha to ‘I Will Survive’ by Gloria Gaynor in a bid to impress the judges and remain in the competition for another week. When it came down to the results, the judges were yet again divided over who to save and who to send packing.

But it was Angela and Carlos who left the show, voted out by three judges out of the four of them, with Layton and Nikita staying on the series. Judge Craig Revel Horwood chose to save Layton and Nikita, saying: "Technically for me personally, the better dance of the night, and the dance I actually enjoyed the most, was Layton and Nikita."

Motsi Mabuse agreed, saying: "Well this was certainly a tough, tough dance off. I based my decision on musicality and balance and that is why I will be saving Nikita and Layton." Anton Du Beke also chose to save Layton and Nikita, telling host Tess Daly: "Well I thought that was quite a tense dance off, I don’t think either couple danced as well as they can.

"It was the closest dance off we’ve had in the series so far. This is the only thing, I saw an error from one of the couples, so I’m going to vote to keep in to the quarter-finals, Layton and Nikita." But Shirley Ballas did not agree with her judges, while the vote was now out of her hands.

Shirley said: "Well important for me always when it comes to Ballroom and Latin is the character of the dance, that it’s true to the dance, timing and quality and I would have voted for Angela and Carlos."
