Former I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here star Charlene White has slammed “petulant children” sending abuse to Nella Rose during her time on the ITV show.

The 26-year-old YouTube star has faced a backlash after she got into an argument with campmate Fred Sirieix over a comment he made about being old enough to be her father. Nella lost her dad in 2020, and during a conversation in the camp, the First Dates star made the innocent remark while the celebs were talking about his age.

“Yeah, but I’m not 26 anymore, am I? I could be your dad,” Fred said. At the time. Nella did not react, but the next day, she said in a confessional that she was “bothered” by the comment, and later confronted Fred. “To me, I don’t care how you said it – to me, that’s disrespectful, and I don’t want to talk to you. Don’t bring up my dead parent, are you stupid? ‘You know I could be your dad right?’ You’re a weirdo,” she fumed.

Despite Fred’s apologies, Nella even refused to eat food prepared by the Frenchman, and she was subjected to fierce criticism from viewers on social media. However, Loose Women star Charlene has defended Nella, and blamed the physiological effects of jungle life having a negative impact on the social media star.

In her column for iNews, the 43-year-old said: "If you have not lived the jungle life, you cannot really understand how hard are those first few days emotionally and psychologically – let alone when you're someone who has spent the past few years of your life without having parents to guide you, as has Nella. And, come on now, she's not even 30. She is allowed to find her feet in the world and not always get it right."

Charlene explained why she thinks some viewers on Twitter shockingly commented on the star’s appearance and her weight. “Why? Because she behaved like millions of young people across the country do, by perhaps overreacting to a situation,” Charlene wrote.

“The difference, though, is that the pile-on involves a section of the online community who loves nothing more than having a go at women. It’s important to remember that these people are a minority of the general population – but, my goodness, they yell and scream loudly, like petulant children desperate to have someone, anyone, listen to them,” the TV presenter added.

Viewers were stunned by Nella’s fiery tirade over Fred’s innocent comment, with one writing: “Nella love, Fred wasn’t trying to offend you about your dad. This isn’t about you or your Dad. If anything he was self-deprecating about his age and his ailing eyesight using a common catchphrase to do so. Am I missing something here?” While another took aim at the abuse directed at the YouTube star. “Even tho it was a bit OTT, I’m sure her reaction came from grief. You lot using this to be racist, fatphobic and just vile are just very strange,” they wrote.
