A wealthy 80-year-old widow started a relationship with a homeless man 23 years her junior, much to the shock of her daughters who believed he wanted her money.

Carolyn Holland, 80, met handyman David Foute, 57, when he began doing odd jobs at her house. But within weeks, they fell for each other. The widow, confessed she never thought she'd fall so deeply in love with a stranger or have a romantic relationship at her age. She said: "He's given me something special, because of his caring spirit. We share a lot. I love his personality, and I hate it when he's gone."

Dave pledged to look after Carolyn as best he could: "All the guys know that Carolyn's my girl and I don't mess about. I don't stay out late because I have someone to go home to. I'm going to remain until the wheels fall off."

However, Carolyn's daughters suspected Dave was trying to scam their mother and would eventually break her heart. Before meeting Carolyn, Dave was homeless and sleeping rough near the pier in Cayucos, according to podcast, Intrigue Million Dollar Lover by Sue Mitchell, who delved into the story.

Dave was a former crystal meth addict, and was involved in drug dealing. He was even jailed for making pipe bombs that the police believed were intended for an attack on a Walmart. Dave was - and still is - convinced that the supermarket chain was intending to microchip everyone.

According to The Express, Carolyn's daughters, Susan and Sally, were shocked by their mother's change in behaviour after meeting Dave. "It's like a fantasy world, it's so bizarre," Sally commented. "She was like a teenager when he came along. She was doing all this weird giggling and laughing."

The sisters didn't believe their mother was in love. They saw a lonely elderly woman in need of company, and a crafty stranger taking advantage. There was also the matter of inheritance. Carolyn and her late husband, Joe, had amassed a property portfolio worth millions.

Susan and Sally thought their mother was losing her mind when she met Dave, and tried to declare her mentally unfit to handle her affairs, something Carolyn denied. Dave also had a dark past, including allegations of domestic abuse and child neglect. This child had been sold by Dave to a couple who eventually legally adopted her.

The romance took a sinister turn when Dave persuaded Carolyn to put two of her properties on the market, even though one of them was rented out to her own grandson and his family. Carolyn had promised to give some of the $600,000 (£480,000) from the property sale to Dave, to provide for his future. Her daughters were furious, believing that he was taking advantage of their mother's mental fragility.

The sale quickly went through and a cheque made out to Carolyn was waiting to be collected from the agents handling the sale. But at that very moment, she was admitted to hospital with Covid, and had refused to be vaccinated on Dave's advice.

By the time she was sent home, Carolyn's poor physical and mental state had allowed her daughters to gain power-of-attorney status, giving them control over her financial affairs, and then died soon after.

Back in Cayucos, Dave is homeless again, although he has the van that Carolyn helped him buy. He's parked in the same spot he was in when he first arrived in town. He still claims that he loved his late girlfriend, telling media: "When she called I came, I miss Carolyn, I loved Carolyn. I was on my little mission trying to make her proud."
